Book excerpt: NOW IN PAPERBACK FEATURING A SHORT STORY FROM THE FORTHCOMING COLLECTION BEYOND ALL REASONABLE DOUBT, JESUS IS ALIVE "A macabre love story that casts an inquisitive eye on Latinidad, womanhood, and celebrity worship." —Keely Weiss, Harper's Bazaar "Melissa Lozada-Oliva's surreal novel-in-verse is sure to delight and surprise readers . . . You may know and love Selena's voice, but Lozada-Oliva's is utterly new, original, and worth hearing, too." —Elena Nicolaou, Oprah Daily A macabre novel in verse of loss, longing, and identity crises following a poet who resurrects pop star Selena from the dead. Melissa Lozada-Oliva's Dreaming of You is an absurd yet heartfelt examination of celebrity worship. A young Latinx poet grappling with loneliness and heartache decides one day to bring Tejano pop star Selena Quintanilla back to life. The séance kicks off an uncanny trip narrated by a Greek chorus of gossiping spirits as she journeys through a dead celebrity prom, encounters her shadow self, and performs karaoke in hell. In visceral poems embodying millennial angst, paragraph-long conversations overheard at her local coffeeshop, and unhinged Twitter rants, Lozada-Oliva reveals an eerie, sometimes gruesome, yet moving love story. Playfully morbid and profoundly candid, an interrogation of Latinidad, womanhood, obsession, and disillusionment, Dreaming of You grapples with the cost of being seen for your truest self.

Book Changing the Story

  • Author : Gayle Greene
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press

  • ISBN : 9780253116543
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Changing the Story written by Gayle Greene and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1992-01-22 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "... Changing the Story... gives an excellent and well-informed account of the differences between the American, Canadian, British, and French attitudes towards feminism and feminist fiction and literary theory.... a very readable book... which reminds us that literature can change us, and that through it we can change ourselves." -- Margaret Drabble "A distinctive contribution -- clear, elegant, precise, and well-read -- to the feminist discussion of narrative, of Anglo/Canadian/white North American novelists, and to contemporary fiction. Greene tracks how feminist novelists draw upon, and negotiate with traditional narrative patterns, and how their critical approach implicates, and provokes, social change. The book brings us to an intelligent post-humanism which does not scant the social meanings of metafictional critique. And, in addition, this book remembers hope." -- Rachel Blau DuPlessis "Changing the Story is an invaluable guide to the feminist classics of the last three decades. This is cultural criticism at its best: engaged, re-visionary, and politically astute." -- Nancy K. Miller "Greene tells a very good tale about how feminist fiction emerged, developed, made changes in the world, and now threatens to wane." -- The Women's Review of Books "Her probing analysis... should captivate general readers as well as academics." -- WLW Journal "Changing the Story is an important work of feminist criticism certain to spark controversy within the feminist community." -- American Literature The feminist fiction movement of the 1960s--1980s was and is as significant a movement as Modernism. Gayle Greene focuses on the works of Doris Lessing, Margaret Drabble, Margaret Atwood, and Margaret Laurence to trace the roots of this feminist literary explosion. She also speculates on the future of feminist fiction in the current regressive period of "post feminism."

Book The Anna Book

Download or read book The Anna Book written by Mickey Pearlman and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-10-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are so many fictional characters named Anna (or a variant), and what does this signify? The startling prevalence of Hannah/Anna/Anne moves from biblical literature (Old Testament Hannah and New Testament St. Anne) to classics (Anna Karenina and Anne Elliot) to popular fiction (Anna Dunlop in Sue Miller's The Good Mother), children's literature (Anne of Green Gables), films (Hannah and Her Sisters), and horror (Annie Wilkes in Stephen King's Misery). Does this represent a conscious or unconscious search for the ultimate or missing mother harking back to mythical and religious traditions? Here twenty-two essayists--literary scholars, writers, historians, classicists, feminist theorists--rise to the challenge, examining Annas in individual literary works or making intriguing connections. Universals and particulars are sorted out as the related names and themes cross time, culture, gender, and racial borders. In the process, much new and fascinating literary criticism is revealed about dozens of authors, including Anthony Trollope, John Berryman, Sean O'Faolain, Edith Wharton, Elizabeth Bowen, Anne Sexton, Arnold Bennett, Doris Lessing, Tillie Olsen, Toni Morrison, Gwendolyn Brooks, Mona Simpson, Mary Lavin, and, yes, Sigmund Freud.

Book I Sought Adventure but It Found Me

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my life I have seen the horrors that happen in this world and have on occasions been present when they happened. My experiences of life give me the qualification to write my book. I have written this book for a very young boy who is very severely handicapped and who is gaining more knowledge every day. He is an inspiration to all disabled people. He also is having an adventure. I love him to bits At the moment I am retired after spending a long time with the forces and security service, so have seen a little bit of action. Again enough qualifications to write my book. The forces even gave me a few medals, which are in a case on my wall. It is a shame they have to be taken down to be cleaned. The silver ones seem to tarnish the worse. I live with my wife Ann and we spend our time between the UK and Italy.

Book Doris Lessing and Sufi Equilibrium

Download or read book Doris Lessing and Sufi Equilibrium written by S. Fahim and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-07-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the rationale of Doris Lessing's development from Classical Realism to mysticism and forms of science fiction and to consider the unifying motifs that appear throughout her novels in her consistent search for Sufi Equilibrium. The four novels selected in this study represent significant stages in Lessing's work. Chapter one focuses on The Grass is Singing, which represents the author's early traditionally realistic writing, to show how far the preoccupations of Lessing's later novels find expression in this early work. Chapter two studies The Golden Notebook, which marks a turning point in formal structure in Lessing's canon and is selected as evidence of her interest in Sufism at that early stage. Chapter three concentrates on the study of The Memoirs of a Survivor, which has elicited a comparatively limited amount of criticism but which proves to be a major achievement when brought into line with Sufi methods of writing. Chapter four considers Lessing's science fiction series, 'Canopus in Argos', tracing sources from Oriental literature - a key which unlocks many areas of obscurity.

Book Patricia Highsmith s Diaries and Notebooks The New York Years 1941 1950

Download or read book Patricia Highsmith s Diaries and Notebooks The New York Years 1941 1950 written by Patricia Highsmith and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential for understanding Patricia Highsmith’s transgressive life and prophetic work, this volume is also “one of the most observant and ecstatic accounts . . . about being young and alive in New York City” (Dwight Garner,—New York Times). Before Alfred Hitchcock adapted her debut novel, Strangers on a Train, for the big screen; before her suave and sociopathic Thomas Ripley snaked his way into the canon of psychological suspense; and before The Price of Salt became a cult classic of romantic obsession, who was Patricia Highsmith? Focused on her formative years in Manhattan, this condensed edition of Highsmith’s monumental Diaries and Notebooks reveals “Pat” at her most passionate and florescent. Beginning in 1941 at Barnard College and encompassing the Texas native’s adventurous twenties,?The New York Years intertwines scenes from her dizzying social life—rife with sleepless nights barhopping in the queer underground Greenwich Village scene, always juggling too many lovers—with an intimate self-portrait of a young artist who by day dispassionately wrote comics for a paycheck. Amid all the hangovers and the breakups, she read voraciously and honed her craft with verve. Laid bare in this perennial reader’s edition are the bold, hilarious, romantic, tragic, and maddeningly contradictory observations of one of “our greatest modernist writers” (Gore Vidal).
