Book DFSMS Extended Address Volume

Download or read book DFSMS Extended Address Volume written by Keith Winnard and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of big data and the storage of all that data is creating a critical problem for many organizations with IBM® z SystemsTM environments. This situation occurs because the data that is stored is using all of the addressable device storage that is available. This IBM RedpaperTM publication describes how extended addressable volume (EAV) for IBM 3390 Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) devices can solve the lack of addressable device storage space problem. The paper also describes the design points of EAV, the value of implementing EAV, and the use of EAV.

Book DFSMShsm Fast Replication Technical Guide

Download or read book DFSMShsm Fast Replication Technical Guide written by Keith Winnard and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DFSMShsm fast replication provides DFSMShsm management for the use of volume-level fast replication. Fast replication is made possible by using the FlashCopy® capability of storage servers. With this capability, a set of storage groups can be defined as a copy pool. The volumes in this pool are processed collectively creating, by fast replication, backup versions that are managed by DFSMShsm. Recovery can be performed at the volume or copy pool level. This capability is designed to work specifically with DB2® Version 8 or later. With DFSMShsm fast replication, the backup and recovery of DB2 copy pools can be managed by DFSMShsm. DFSMShsm fast replication provides a quick, easy-to-use backup and recovery solution. This IBM® Redbooks® publication consists of a technical overview of the DFSMShsm fast replication function in z/OS® V1R12 Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem (DFSMS). It provides you with the information that you need to understand and evaluate the function, with practical implementation hints and tips. This book is written for storage professionals, database administrators, and system programmers who have experience with the components of DFSMS. It provides sufficient information for you to implement the DFSMShsm fast replication function in your storage environment.

Book Reduce Storage Occupancy and Increase Operations Efficiency with IBM zEnterprise Data Compression

Download or read book Reduce Storage Occupancy and Increase Operations Efficiency with IBM zEnterprise Data Compression written by Paolo Bruni and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IBM® zEnterprise® Data Compression (zEDC) capability and the Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe or PCI Express) hardware adapter called zEDC Express were announced in July 2013 as enhancements to the IBM z/OS® V2.1 operating system (OS) and the IBM zEnterprise EC12 (zEC12) and the IBM zEnterprise BC12 (zBC12). zEDC is optimized for use with large sequential files, and uses an industry-standard compression library. zEDC can help to improve disk usage and optimize cross-platform exchange of data with minimal effect on processor usage. The first candidate for such compression was the System Management Facility (SMF), and support for basic sequential access method (BSAM) and queued sequential access method (QSAM) followed in first quarter 2014. IBM software development kit (SDK) 7 for z/OS Java, IBM Encryption Facility for z/OS, IBM Sterling Connect:Direct® for z/OS and an IBM z/VM® guest can also use zEDC Express. zEDC can also be used for Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem data set services (DFSMSdss) dumps and restores, and for DFSMS hierarchical storage manager (DFSMShsm) when using DFSMSdss for data moves. This IBM Redbooks® publication describes how to set up the zEDC functionality to obtain the benefits of portability, reduced storage space, and reduced processor use for large operational sets of data with the most current IBM System z® environment.
