Download or read book The Impact of Interactive Music Therapy on the Pediatric Oncology Population written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an unfortunate truth that a child with cancer will experience pain or anxiety during their battle with illness. Research shows that Interactive Music Therapy is extremely effective at the bedside of hospitalized pediatric cancer patients in reducing pain (Thrane, 2013; Huang, Good, Zauszniewski, 2010; Potvin, Bradt, Kesslick, 2015; Naylor, Kingsnorth, Lamont, McKenever, 2011; Tanriverdi, Aydemir, 2013) and anxiety (Callaghan, Dun, Baron, Barry, 2012; Thrane, 2013; Potvin et al., 2015; Docherty, Cherven, Stegenga, Ferguson, Roll, Stickler, Haase, 2012; Robb et al.,. 2008; Kemper, Bouhairie, Martin, Woods 2008; Tanriverdi, Aydemir, 2013). In cancer centers, the demand is quickly growing for adjunctive therapies to support sick children (Barry, O'Callaghan, Wheeler, Grocke, 2010). The purpose of this project is to review and evaluate current evidence surrounding the use of interactive music therapy for pediatric oncology patients. Implications of the research and methods for implementing holistic and interactive nursing care will be explored.

Book Resource Oriented Music Therapy in Pediatric Oncology

Download or read book Resource Oriented Music Therapy in Pediatric Oncology written by Annabelle Brault and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this philosophical inquiry was to make a case for the clinical relevance of a Resource-Oriented approach in pediatric oncology music therapy, and then propose a conceptualization of this approach using Rolvsjord's (2010) four characteristic statements of the resource-oriented approach as guiding principles. The characteristics are: (a) the nurturing of strengths, resources, and potential, (b) collaboration rather than intervention, (c) the view of the individual within their context, and (d) the view of music as a health resource. Background information instrumental in the development of this philosophical inquiry was explored and presented. This included a description of the pediatric oncology context, the needs of children with cancer and their families, and salient tenets of the approach. The pediatric oncology music therapy literature was systematically reviewed using the four defining statements of the Resource-Oriented approach to argue its relevance in the pediatric oncology context. The characteristics were first explicated, then used as a lens to explore the four categories of needs (physical, emotional, social, and developmental) of children with cancer and their family. From this critical analysis, parallels between the literature and the resource-oriented approach were identified, while new insights emerged. This philosophical inquiry provides a conceptual framework that may serve as a starting point for those wanting to explore a Resource-Oriented approach and discourse within problem-oriented and/or biomedical contexts.

Book The Effect of Music Therapy on Five year Disease free Survival Rates in Pediatric Neuroblastoma

Download or read book The Effect of Music Therapy on Five year Disease free Survival Rates in Pediatric Neuroblastoma written by Whitney Quitta and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem: Music therapy is underutilized by healthcare providers. Studies have shown the benefits of music therapy as an adjunct to conventional treatment modalities, but little research has been done on music therapy's effects on pediatric cancer patients. Methods: A PubMed search was performed for peer-reviewed articles written within the last five years that involved the use of music therapy in pediatric oncology patients. Only full-text, English journal articles were selected for this literature review. Results: All articles found support the use of music therapy in pediatric cancer patients, and the original studies performed show that music therapy has beneficial short-term psychological and physiologic effects. Conclusions: Music therapy has a positive significant effect on pediatric cancer patients in a short-term timeframe, but there is little research that assesses how music therapy might affect pediatric cancer patients long-term.

Book Music Therapy in Palliative Care

Download or read book Music Therapy in Palliative Care written by David Aldridge and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last decade music therapists have developed their work with people who have life-threatening illnesses and with those who are dying. This book presents some of that work from music therapists working in different approaches, in different countries, showing how valuable the inclusion of music therapy in palliative care has already proved to be. It is important for the dying, or those with terminal illness, that approaches are used which integrate the physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of their being. The contributors to this book emphasize the importance of working not only with the patient but with the ward situation, friends and family members. By offering patients the chance to be creative they become something other than patients - they become expressive beings, and there is an intimacy in music therapy that is important for those who are suffering. Many of the contributors write in their own personal voice, providing a particular insight which will be valuable not only to other music therapists seeking to enrich their own ways of working, but to all those involved in caring for the sick and the dying. Contributors describe their work with both children and adults living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases.
