Book Music Study in Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book Music Study in Germany Classic Reprint written by Amy Fay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music Study in Germany IN preparing for the public letters which were written only for home, I have hoped that some readers would find in them the charm of style which the writer's friends fancy them to possess; that others would think the description of her masters amid their pupils, and especially Liszt, worth preserving; while piano students would be grateful for the information that an analysis of the piano technique has been made, such as very greatly to diminish the difficulties of the instrument. How much of Herr Deppe's piano method is original with himself, pianists must decide. That he has at least made an invaluable re'sume' of all or most of their secrets, my sister believes no student of the instrument who fairly and conscientiously examines into the matter will deny. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What We Hear in Music: A Laboratory Course of Study in Music History and Appreciation, for Four Years of High School, Academy, College, Music Club or Home Study Yet ever, during the development of form, or poetic content, and of program music, the influence of the folk, has been apparent, and this strong national feeling has given rise in the modern epoch to the development of the great schools of Russia, Scandinavia and Bohemia, which to-day rank with the Italian, French and German schools. Our most important and necessary study of how to understand music, really begins with a definite knowledge of these four funda mental principles. We shall spend our first year of study in learning to recognize these elements as they may be expressed by the human voice or various instruments. We shall carefully consider the national feeling as expressed in the simple folk dance and song of the various countries, and learn to discriminate between the racial peculiarities, which are reflected in the art and music of the people of all lands. For our second year's study, we consider the historical develop ment of music from ancient times to our own day. In the third year's work, we take up the closer relationship of instrumental music to the fundamental ideas manifested in Courses I and II. We study carefully the individual tones of the instruments of the orchestra, and trace the development of the larger forms of instrumental music. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schubert, the Man: Translated From the German The international character of the Schubert Centenary makes it opportune to present this biographical work by Oscar Bie, translated into English. Intrinsically the book is an admirable study of Schubert the man, combining sympathy with scholarship. It possesses additional weight as the Centennial biography, since it fills the long-felt want for a non-technical study, competent on the musical side and in scope wide enough to merit the interest and appreciation of the layman. Mr. Bie's literary distinction and musical knowl edge have been amply demonstrated in his books on the opera, the dance, and the history of music - the majority of which have been translated into English. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Purity in Musical Art The fact that this Essay was first published more than half a century ago, might seem, at first sight, to render its translation now a work of doubtful utility. But, inasmuch as it is still in demand in Germany, as is proved by the publication of the Fifth Edition as recently as in 1875, and looking to the great extension of the study and practice of music in our own country, I am persuaded that it will be read both with interest and with profit in England. Book Studies in the Idyl in German Literature Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in the Idyl in German Literature Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Gustav Albert Andreen and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Idyl in German Literature, Vol. 3 The purpose of this dissertation is to set forth the origin, development, and character of the idyl in German literature up to the time of the publication of the Luise by Voss, in 1795. This includes three main parts: 1. idyllic literature in Germany before Opitz; 2. the development of the pastoral idyl depicting an ideal existence and its culmination in Gessner; 3. the reaction which followed, resulting in the realistic idyl of Maler Muller and Voss. In this thesis the term Idyl is used in the sense of a small "Genrebild," complete in itself, which pictures simple life in close communion with nature, as over against the more complex conditions of an advanced civilization, especially of city life. This Genrebild or Idyl may depict real life (as in Theocritus and Voss), or idealized existence in an imaginary Golden Age (as in Gessner). Book The History of Music Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Music Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by Emil Naumann and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Music, Vol. 4 Not even the excellent master Heinrich Schiitz can be credited with so universal and intimate acquaintance with contemporary musical theory and practice. That he well-nigh succeeded in fusing the teachings of the two chief schools of his time is indeed remarkable, and singles him out from the crowd of his contemporaries; yet, put in juxtaposition with our six great masters, he cannot be said. To have reached their level either in the ideal world or in the creation of new forms, although what he did prepared the way for them in a very glorious manner. To us, each of this noble six is the discoverer of new lands in the world of tonal art, on which but few uncultivated portions remain for their successors to till and fructify. The style of Bach, Handel, Gluck, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven was grounded on the intensest objectivity, whilst that of their great, talented followers is of a subjective nature, united to a more or less interestingly developed musical manner. The great German tone-poets, dating from the beginning of the last century, fall naturally into two divisions, the first of which may fittingly be described as representing The epoch of German genius, and the second The epoch of the great talents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Musical Composers: German, French and Italian, Edited, With an Introduction At this period Germany was beginning to experience its musical renaissance. The various German courts felt that throb Of life and enthusiasm which had distinguished the Italian principalities in the preceding century in the direction of painting and sculpture. Every little capital was a focus Of artistic rays, and there was a general Spirit Of rivalry among the princes, who aspired to cultivate the arts of peace as well as those of war. Bach had become known as a gifted musician, not only by his wonderful powers as an organist, but by two Of his earlier master pieces - Gott ist mein Konig and Ich hatte viel Bekummerniss. Under the influence of an atmosphere so artistic, Bach's ardour for study increased with his success, and his rapid advancement in musical power met with warm appreciation. Book Singing Like Germans

Download or read book Singing Like Germans written by Kira Thurman and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Singing Like Germans, Kira Thurman tells the sweeping story of Black musicians in German-speaking Europe over more than a century. Thurman brings to life the incredible musical interactions and transnational collaborations among people of African descent and white Germans and Austrians. Through this compelling history, she explores how people reinforced or challenged racial identities in the concert hall. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, audiences assumed the categories of Blackness and Germanness were mutually exclusive. Yet on attending a performance of German music by a Black musician, many listeners were surprised to discover that German identity is not a biological marker but something that could be learned, performed, and mastered. While Germans and Austrians located their national identity in music, championing composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms as national heroes, the performance of their works by Black musicians complicated the public's understanding of who had the right to play them. Audiences wavered between seeing these musicians as the rightful heirs of Austro-German musical culture and dangerous outsiders to it. Thurman explores the tension between the supposedly transcendental powers of classical music and the global conversations that developed about who could perform it. An interdisciplinary and transatlantic history, Singing Like Germans suggests that listening to music is not a passive experience, but an active process where racial and gendered categories are constantly made and unmade.
