Book Dancing Spirit Love and War

Download or read book Dancing Spirit Love and War written by Evadne Kelly and published by Studies in Dance History. This book was released on 2019 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meke, a traditional rhythmic dance accompanied by singing, signifies an important piece of identity for Fijians. Despite its complicated history of colonialism, racism, censorship, and religious conflict, meke remained a vital part of artistic expression and culture. Evadne Kelly performs close readings of the dance in relation to an evolving landscape, following the postcolonial reclamation that provided dancers with political agency and a strong sense of community that connected and fractured Fijians worldwide. Through extensive archival and ethnographic fieldwork in both Fiji and Canada, Kelly offers key insights into an underrepresented dance form, region, and culture. Her perceptive analysis of meke will be of interest in dance studies, postcolonial and Indigenous studies, anthropology and performance ethnography, and Pacific Island studies.

Download or read book Sociologists and Music written by Paul Honigsheim and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociologists have always been fascinated with music. In one way or another they have encountered music as an important social force in its own right, as an accompaniment or byproduct of phenomena they studied (such as youth culture or the drug scene), or as a means for obtaining social compliance (as in religious ceremonies or in the military). This book goes one step toward remedying this situation by culling the existing literature for building blocks toward introducing sociological synthesis and by presenting the English version of the extensive writings on music and society by Paul Honigsheim.

Book Multiculturalisme et identit en litt rature et en art

Download or read book Multiculturalisme et identit en litt rature et en art written by Université de Polynésie Française and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2002 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Situating Women

  • Author : Nicole George
  • Publisher : ANU E Press
  • Release : 2012-11-01

Download or read book Situating Women written by Nicole George and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the time of decolonisation in Fiji, women’s organisations have navigated a complex political terrain. While they have stayed true to the aim of advancing women’s status, their work has been buffeted by national political upheavals and changing global and regional directions in development policy-making. This book documents how women activists have understood and responded to these challenges. It is the first book to write women into Fiji’s postcolonial history, providing a detailed historical account of that country’s gender politics across four tumultuous decades. It is also the first to examine the ‘situated’ nature of gender advocacy in the Pacific Islands more broadly. It does this by analysing trends in activity, from women’s radical and provocative activism of the 1960s to a more self-evaluative and reflexive mood of engagement in later decades, showing how interplaying global and local factors can shape women’s understandings of gender justice and their pursuit of that goal.
