Book excerpt: With technology, music has never been more constant. It is heard on phones and in waiting rooms, in coffee shops and on television. Despite such exposure, the number of people able to make music for themselves is dwindling. Classical Christian schools have a unique motivation to remedy this. Building a musically literate culture is foundational for the cultivation of beauty and the worship of God. Where better to start a generational overhaul than with classrooms full of our littlest worshipers? The options for music training are many, but not equal. This book is designed to help the school administrator or music teacher sift through the pile and emerge with a vision and tools for building a flourishing classical Christian music program. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music, Education, and Religion: Intersections and Entanglements explores the critical role that religion can play in formal and informal music education. As in broader educational studies, research in music education has tended to sidestep the religious dimensions of teaching and learning, often reflecting common assumptions of secularity in contemporary schooling in many parts of the world. This book considers the ways in which the forces of religion and belief construct and complicate the values and practices of music education—including teacher education, curriculum texts, and teaching repertoires. The contributors to this volume embrace a range of perspectives from a variety of disciplines, examining religious, agnostic, skeptical, and atheistic points of view. Music, Education, and Religion is a valuable resource for all music teachers and scholars in related fields, interrogating the sociocultural and epistemological underpinnings of music repertoires and global educational practices.

Download or read book Music for Others written by Nathan Myrick and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Musical activity is one of the most ubiquitous and highly valued forms of social interaction in North America (to say nothing of world over), being engaged from sporting events to political rallies, concerts to churches. Moreover, music's use as an affective agent for political and religious programs suggests that it has ethical significance. Indeed, many have said as much. It is surprising then that music's ethical significance remains one of the most undertheorized aspects of both moral philosophy and music scholarship. Music for Others: Care, Justice, and Relational Ethics in Christian Music fills part of this scholarly gap by focusing on the religious aspects of musical activity, particularly on the practices of Christian communities. Based on ethnomusicological fieldwork at three Protestant churches and a group of seminary students studying in an immersion course at South by Southwest (SXSW), and synthesizing theories of discourse, formation, and care ethics oriented towards restorative justice, it first argues that relationships are ontological for both human beings and musical activity. It further argues that musical meaning and emotion converge in human bodies such that music participates in personal and communal identity construction in affective ways-yet these constructions are not always just. Thus, considering these aspects of music's ways of being in the world, Music for Others finally argues that music is ethical when it preserves people in and restores people to just relationships with each other, and thereby with God.

Book The Status of Music Education in Selected Home School Communities in Florida

Download or read book The Status of Music Education in Selected Home School Communities in Florida written by Rolanda A. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to describe the status of music education in the home schools of Florida. The specific problems of the study were to (1) investigate the demographic characteristics of home school families in Florida, (2) determine the primary reasons why home educators included or did not include music in their curricula, (3) investigate the use of music in home school instruction, and (4) investigate the assessment of music learning in the home school curriculum as determined by the 2008 Florida Statutes. Using the survey technique in research, 367 home schooling families who were members of the Florida Coalition of Christian Private Schools Association, selected umbrella schools, and support groups participated in the study. Results indicated that most of the respondents in this study were Caucasian, well-educated, religious, members of a home school association, and resided in a suburban area with a household that included two or three children, and the mother was the primary educator. The three most important goals for including music in the home schools were to enjoy listening to music, to play an instrument, and to present a well-balanced curriculum. The three top reasons for not including music in home schools were lack of funding, limited parental skills, and low student interest. Most home educators provided music experiences through a variety of approaches, including private lessons, ensembles, church and communitymusicactivities, supportgroups, andcooperativeprograms. Mostofthe materials used were instrumental method books, audio recordings, and repertoire books. Further, the three top music assessments used to monitor the progress of home learners were observations, performances, and demonstrations that were generally assessed on a weekly basis.
