This Lent without resurrection to which our ancestors were subjected to, began with the Spanish Invasion and has continued till this day in 2020. By changing uses of the past in the present, they were able to shift ideologies, power relations, epistemological conceptions, and economic contexts into the Cuba we know today. Cuban Cultural Heritage explores the role that cultural heritage and museums played in the construction of a national identity in postcolonial Cuba. Starting with independence from Spain in 1898 and moving through Cuban-American rapprochement in 2014, Pablo Alonso González illustrates how political and ideological shifts have influenced ideas about heritage and how, in turn, heritage has been used by different social actors to reiterate their status, spread new ideologies, and consolidate political regimes. Unveiling the connections between heritage, power, and ideology, Alonso González delves into the intricacies of Cuban history, covering key issues such as Cuba's cultural and political relationships with Spain, the United States, the Soviet Union, and so-called Third World countries; the complexities of Cuba's status as a postcolonial state; and the potential future paths of the Revolution in the years to come. Yet, in spite of the impossibility of giving anything but a highly abstract and extremely selective impression in an exhibition, very few museums problematize this or discuss their priorities with their public. They don’t ask “what are the other truths of the matter?” Though the essays in this collection are not written with museums and truth as their explicit subject, they highlight contested truths, the absence of the truth of the underprivileged, whether one truth is more worthy than the other, and whether lesser truths can dilute the value of greater truths. One of the articles included here lets youngsters choose which truth is most probable or just, while another talks about an exhibition where the public must choose which truth to adhere to before entering. One shows how a political change gives a new opportunity to finally restore valuable truths of the past to the present, and another describes the highly dangerous task of making museums and memorials for the truths of the oppressed. Lastly, one explores whether we live in a period where the sources for authorized truths are fragmented and questioned, and asks, what should the consequences for museums be?

Book excerpt: The current publication, entitled Folksonomies, sets out the contents of a selection of works I have done lately and it recounts its exhibit walkthrough, organized on the basis of two individual projects which run parallel throughout 2016. One of them relates to the works arising from my interest in Big Data and which is composed of different accounts with works in painting, mural installation and drawing. It is the project I have called Sombras_Big_Dat@. The second Project is about my activity around engraving, silk screen printing and digital printing which I have named 32 bits_memoria_grafica. The book is thus structured in two parts, starting with the Sombras_Big_Dat@ project and specifically, its showing at the Salamanca Museum, as I have shown here the set of works which comprise the project in the best conditions of space and illumination, which afforded us to collect some interesting photographic scenes on site and views of works which render quite an accurate idea of the jobs I have done. The second part of this publication documents the exhibition called 32_bits_memoria_grafica, with works in engraving and printed work. Throughout my career, creating projects with these means has been and still is crucial: not only does it complement the creative activity I do with other disciplines, but it also provides me with other channels for my thoughts and presentation of ideas. The council of the Arts Engraving Museum chose my project and I was offered a chance to show a walkthrough of several years of activity which I structured on the basis of eight thematic axes: Energies, Presences, Dialogs, Silences, Places and territories, Echos and appearances, Human schemes and Dream landscapes, around which 32 works spin, executed with chalcographic engraving, digital printing and silk screen printing. The set of works grouped in such fashion composed a remarkable atmosphere which contributed to the understanding and tuning in with the works and their crossed meanings.
