Spark beings a Quixotic quest to learn the truth. His attempts to pin down the mysterious origins of The Law and to answer the eternal question, "Who was Murphy and what is the true meaning of Murphy's Law?" are both amusing and relevatory. Can there ever be a rational explanation? The answers turn out to be one part scientific to three parts psychology. The world has changed a lot in the last 4000 years, but our brains haven't. So, again and again we find our reactions are just plain out of date. Why do you take the same wrong turning every single time? Why, when you lose something, do you keep looking in the same place over and over? And why is it suddenly there the twentieth time you look?

Book Self Reference

    Book Details:
  • Author : S.J. Bartlett
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 940093551X
  • Pages : 365 pages

Download or read book Self Reference written by S.J. Bartlett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-reference, although a topic studied by some philosophers and known to a number of other disciplines, has received comparatively little explicit attention. For the most part the focus of studies of self-reference has been on its logical and linguistic aspects, with perhaps disproportionate emphasis placed on the reflexive paradoxes. The eight-volume Macmillan Encyclopedia of Philosophy, for example, does not contain a single entry in its index under "self-reference", and in connection with "reflexivity" mentions only "relations", "classes", and "sets". Yet, in this volume, the introductory essay identifies some 75 varieties and occurrences of self-reference in a wide range of disciplines, and the bibliography contains more than 1,200 citations to English language works about reflexivity. The contributed papers investigate a number of forms and applications of self-reference, and examine some of the challenges posed by its difficult temperament. The editors hope that readers of this volume will gain a richer sense of the sti11largely unexplored frontiers of reflexivity, and of the indispensability of reflexive concepts and methods to foundational inquiries in philosophy, logic, language, and into the freedom, personality and intelligence of persons.

Book Mother Murphy s Law

  • ISBN : 9780671622749
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book Mother Murphy s Law written by Bruce Lansky and published by Running Press Adult. This book was released on 1986-05-02 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brief Interview With Mother Murphy, Himself Q. How did you come up with the idea for Mother Murphy's Law? Mother Murphy: I spend a lot of time with my children, and it seems that something is always going wrong. I used to think I was a klutzy daddy...then it dawned on me: 1. When I was a kid, everything my parents did was wrong. 2. Now that I'm a parent, everything I do is wrong. Q. What does Mother Murphy's Law explain? Mother Murphy: The book is pretty much a catalog of things that can go wrong as you have and raise kids. For example: If most of the baby shower gifts you receive are blue, your baby will be a girl. Your baby's diaper is wet moments after you've changed her into a clean one...and leakproof diapers aren't. your toddler knocks on your bedroom door the moment you're about to have sex...or barges in unannounced at the peak of passion. Any food that's good for your child is "yukky"...and any food that's loaded with sugar, salt and fat is "yummy." Anything you say or do when you're with your teenager in public will embarrass him.
