Download or read book The Balkans in Travel Writing written by Marija Knežević and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits images of the Balkans in twentieth-century travel writing that vividly mirrors the turbulent changes that the region went through. As such, it provides a vital basis for research into the variety of possibilities, or obstacles, present on the region’s path to accession, when its unique heritage will have to be reconciled with a more European identity. This volume explores the work of well-known authors, such as Rebecca West, Paul Theroux, Robert D. Kaplan, and also contributes to travel writing theory by addressing less-known travellers who recorded their thoughts on the social dynamics of the region. The corpus offers divergent and often contradictory views, ranging from moral and political criticism to a delight in the rich heritage and the still “undiscovered” Balkan paths. More importantly, its generic potentials prove to overcome both the discourse of power and the discourse of apology. Its narrative style also comprises striking variations, from the objective and well-researched approaches to quick impressionist sketches. Being a multi-generic form, travel writing is observed from a multidisciplinary perspective, encompassing fields such as literature, linguistics, history, sociology, anthropology, ethnology, political sciences, and geography.
Download or read book Us Merchant Mariner s Ww Ii Diary a Small Window of Tens of Thousands written by Harry G. Pierson Jr. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WW II Diary of a US Merchant Mariner brings to light previously untold WW II sea action and the wartime experiences of a few seagoing men, their ships, and their voyages. The diary includes high-seas action, drama, and a bizarre event that needs to be told for posterity. The story opens another small door into the lives of the seamen whose stories had heretofore rested dormant and gathered dust. The men of the Merchant Marine and the Navy Armed Guard, who comprise a forgotten gray area, forged a strong chain, and proved an indispensable team in the course of WW II. The narration here gathers together personal significant events of maritime shipboard action, and will provide insight and resources for future generations concerning how the US fought the way to victory. Based upon the WW II wartime voyages of the merchant ships listed in the introduction, the story also relates the daily activities recorded within the ships log books, several forms which were consulted for this book. A ships secret log book is maintained by the ships master, and subsequently is administered by the US Navy. The secret log, a wealth of information, contains voyage routes, ports of call, ship events, and records of longitude, latitude, and enemy action. In addition, the Naval Armed Guard commander also kept a daily log book of the armed guard service activities. And last, the official log book for ship activities and the merchant crews welfare and affairs, was kept by the ships chief mate. It was required by federal law and provided by the US Coast Guard. These and other records can be found shelved at the Naval District US Government Archived Files.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive exploration of why human security is relevant to the Arctic and what achieving it can mean, covering the areas of health of the environment, identity of peoples, supply of traditional foods, community health, economic opportunities, and political stability. The traditional definition of security has already been actively employed in the Arctic region for decades, particularly in relation to natural resource sovereignty issues, but how and why should the human aspect be introduced? What can this region teach us about human security in the wider world? The book reviews the potential threats to security, putting them in an analytical framework and indicating a clear path for solutions.Contributions come from natural, social and humanities scientists, hailing from Canada, Russia, Finland and Norway. Environmental Change and Human Security in the Arctic is an essential resource for policy-makers, community groups, researchers and students working in the field of human security, particularly for those in the Arctic regions.
Download or read book Russian Fisheries Management written by Geir Hønneland and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive introduction to Russian fisheries management in the Western literature. It sets out the basic principles and organisational structure underlying Russian fisheries management and describes associated processes and practices, such as quota allocation, technical regulation and enforcement of fishery legislation. The book focuses attention on fisheries management at the federal level and in Russia's northern fishery basin, which is the largest fishery region in European Russia. Problems such as institutional conflict, alleged corruption and incomplete legislation on fisheries are discussed, as are the assets of scientific and technical expertise found in the country's Soviet legacy. Throughout the book, the performance of the Russian system for fisheries management is evaluated in relation to the requirements of a precautionary approach to fisheries, as set out in contemporary international law.

Download or read book Allied Intervention in Russia 1918 1919 written by John Swettenham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When originally published in 1967 and using archive material from official records in Ottawa, this book threw new light on the motives and actions of the intervening powers. Allied intervention took place in three main areas: Northern and Southern Russia as well as Siberia. Canada was the major Commonwealth contributor to the intervention in Siberia and a superfial account of the events and their political implications is contained in the official history of the Canadian Army in the First World War. This book discusses the subject in depth and from an international perspective. In this critical assessment the story of the Allied operations in Russia has been written against the double background of the issues and events of the Russian Civil War itself and of the international intrigues and rivalries of the Allies.
Download or read book Seamounts written by Tony J. Pitcher and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seamounts are ubiquitous undersea mountains rising from the ocean seafloor that do not reach the surface. There are likely many hundreds of thousands of seamounts, they are usually formed from volcanoes in the deep sea and are defined by oceanographers as independent features that rise to at least 0.5 km above the seafloor, although smaller features may have the same origin. This book follows a logical progression from geological and physical processes, ecology, biology and biogeography, to exploitation, management and conservation concerns. In 21 Chapters written by 57 of the world’s leading seamount experts, the book reviews all aspects of their geology, ecology, biology, exploitation, conservation and management. In Section I of this book, several detection and estimation techniques for tallying seamounts are reviewed, along with a history of seamount research. This book represents a unique and fresh synthesis of knowledge of seamounts and their biota and is an essential reference work on the topic. It is an essential purchase for all fisheries scientists and managers, fish biologists, marine biologists and ecologists, environmental scientists, conservation biologists and oceanographers. It will also be of interest to members of fish and wildlife agencies and government departments covering conservation and management. Supplementary material is available at: www.seamountsbook.info
