In the magnificent, sought after Hamptons a young au pair has vanished. When she shows up savagely raped and murdered, in the Bronx, top SVU detective Bella de Franco is called to the scene and ordered to find her killer. She enters the life this young woman led, from the sleazy NYC nanny agency whose owner runs a sex ring, to the wealthy families who employ these girls, both in the city and at the beach, and finds a world whose physical beauty masks a twisted existence. Bella is no longer a stranger to places where privilege and money hide secrets. She and her new partner, Mack, have just solved two murders in towns inhabited with the one percent. But in this fabled playground of the rich, where thirty million dollar homes hide behind electric wrought iron gates and hand cut hedges, Bella encounters a culture sharper, and more shocking, than anything she has seen before. Husbands with power and influence, revered for their money and status, do whatever they want. Wives, fixtures for a public image, look the other way, as long as the perks keep coming. Friends, who love the lifestyle, keep friends secrets. Even the kids, who once knew better, remain quiet in the face of it all. Bella works tirelessly to uncover the truth about the high paid escorts, phony marriages, and broken families that littered the life of her victim, and to find who it was who needed the young girl out of the way. But she doesn’t expect the answer she gets, one that leads her to question all she thought she knew…

Book The San Francisco Doodler Murders

Download or read book The San Francisco Doodler Murders written by Kate Zaliznock and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, one of San Francisco's most horrific unsolved serial murder cases began. In less than two years, the man police called "The Doodler" took at least five lives, terrorized the LGBTQ community, and left three survivors forever changed. Initial reports claimed the murderer didn't approach his victims with the knife he used to kill them, but that the suspect shared skilled drawings--sketches of faces and animals--before leaving a string of gay men to bleed out on the sands of Ocean Beach. Police investigations and activist efforts to uncover the killer led to several suspects, but no definitive identification of the artist of death. Author Kate Zaliznock shines a light on this riveting cold case.

Book excerpt: JACK MURPHY DELIVERS JUSTICE Detective Jack Murphy can read a crime scene like a book. When the naked, brutalized corpse of a narcotics cop is found, it’s not the body that tells him a sick killer is on the loose, but the monkey figurine—of the “see no evil” kind—shoved down his throat. It’s a message, not a clue. Then a high-profile judge is set on fire. Another figurine left behind. Murphy has a guess what’s next. But it’s not what he expects. The torture-killer taking out Evansville’s defenders of law and order isn’t the only one with secrets. The victims might have a few, too . . . Praise for Rick Reed and his novels “A jaw-dropping thriller.”—Gregg Olsen “Leaves you wondering whether you really did lock the doors before you went to bed.”—Mystery Scene “Put this on your must-read list.”—John Lutz “The things Reed has seen as a police officer make for a great book.” —Suspense Magazine “Rick Reed knows the dark side as only a real-life cop can, and his writing crackles with authenticity.” —Shane Gericke

The story they were working on has touched a sensitive nerve in Washington, where powerful men are plotting to undermine the current President’s administration. A regime change is about to take place if Frain doesn’t help a newly formed Task Force. After someone tampers with the fuel tank on his Cessna, Frain takes it personally. He reluctantly joins CIA analyst, Ruth Harding, in the dangerous quest for answers. The deadly search takes the pair through Virginia woodlands and a hold-on-tight ride on a storm whipped Chesapeake Bay. Harding’s beautiful, bold, and just a little bit scary and, together, they find themselves in the thick of a massive conspiracy, involving a vengeance seeking Euphrates farmer, a power hungry senator, and a rogue agent of the Central Intelligence Agency. In the end, Danny Frain has a decision to make, and he’ll make it in the middle of the worst recession since the Great Depression. If Cable News One airs the story, it could have devastating consequences for the Stock Market and America’s standing in the World, which is already at a low point. It will be–– Bad for the Country. . .

Spurred by his estranged wife's troubled pregnancy, he decides to honor their marriage. Joel reaches out to the most unlikely person, his stepmother and long-time nemesis, Madeline Mitchell, pleading with her to let him back into the family business. Don, the eldest living son, has other plans and vehemently discounts Madeline's recommendation, not ready to trust his half-brother Joel. Don has paid his dues, suffered years of rejection, and played second fiddle to his father's second family long enough. Feeling robbed of her rightful place in the company, Tamara, the only remaining heir to the Mitchell fortune, gets wind of what she considers to be her mother's and brother's betrayal. She is outraged that they're considering someone other than her for the CEO role. Refusing to lose out again to the whims of her family, Tamara writes off Madeline and Don as traitors, concocting her own way to get the upper hand. Harmony seems impossible for the Mitchell clan, with each step toward truce and reconciliation resulting in two backward steps shrouded in conflict. Unforgiving shoves years of conflict and bitterness to the edge, when everyone is forced to set aside their issues and come together in order to save DMI, the Mitchell legacy, and the life of a disturbed family member. They must learn painfully that forgiveness is the only path to restoration, and those who choose another route are bound to face unavoidable consequences.

Book Visitation

  • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book Visitation written by Jennifer DeClue and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Visitation, Jennifer DeClue shows how Black feminist avant-garde filmmakers draw from historical archives in order to visualize and reckon with violence suffered by Black women in the United States. DeClue argues that these filmmakers—including Kara Walker, Kara Lynch, Tourmaline, and Ja’Tovia Gary—create spaces of mourning and reckoning rather than voyeurism and pornotropy. Through their use of editing, performance, and cinematic experimentation, these filmmakers intervene in the production of Blackness and activate new ways of seeing Black women and telling their stories. Theorizing these films as a form of conjure work, DeClue shows how these filmmakers raise the specters of Black women from the past and invite them to reveal history from their point of view. In so doing, Black feminist avant-garde filmmakers channel spirits that haunt archives and create cinematic arenas for witnessing Black women battling for survival during pivotal and exceedingly violent moments in US history.
