Download or read book Pretext for Mass Murder written by John Roosa and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2006-09-05 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early morning hours of October 1, 1965, a group calling itself the September 30th Movement kidnapped and executed six generals of the Indonesian army, including its highest commander. The group claimed that it was attempting to preempt a coup, but it was quickly defeated as the senior surviving general, Haji Mohammad Suharto, drove the movement’s partisans out of Jakarta. Riding the crest of mass violence, Suharto blamed the Communist Party of Indonesia for masterminding the movement and used the emergency as a pretext for gradually eroding President Sukarno’s powers and installing himself as a ruler. Imprisoning and killing hundreds of thousands of alleged communists over the next year, Suharto remade the events of October 1, 1965 into the central event of modern Indonesian history and the cornerstone of his thirty-two-year dictatorship. Despite its importance as a trigger for one of the twentieth century’s worst cases of mass violence, the September 30th Movement has remained shrouded in uncertainty. Who actually masterminded it? What did they hope to achieve? Why did they fail so miserably? And what was the movement’s connection to international Cold War politics? In Pretext for Mass Murder, John Roosa draws on a wealth of new primary source material to suggest a solution to the mystery behind the movement and the enabling myth of Suharto’s repressive regime. His book is a remarkable feat of historical investigation. Finalist, Social Sciences Book Award, the International Convention of Asian Scholars

The film is called The Wild Nymph, and it may be the finest pornographic movie ever made. A relic of the 1950s, when erotic cinema was more artistic than smutty, it was filmed on a shoestring budget by the enigmatic genius Sol Dahlman. But 20 years later, the film has been forgotten and Dahlman has become a recluse. Finding him will be a deadly proposition. A Hollywood producer comes to the state capital in search of Dahlman, hoping to capitalize on pornography’s growing mainstream acceptance. He meets Mike McCall, the governor’s top troubleshooter, whose only interest in pornography is in keeping women’s lib protestors from picketing the theaters. When Dahlman is found dead, it falls to McCall to stop the bloodshed. Sex can be controversial, but murder is always taboo.

Download or read book Reclaiming Parkland written by James DiEugenio and published by Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New foreword by J.F.K. director Oliver Stone Reclaiming Parkland details the failed attempt of Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks and producer Gary Goetzman to make Vincent Bugliosi’s mammoth book about the Kennedy assassination, Reclaiming History, into a miniseries. It exposes the questionable origins of Reclaiming History in a dubious mock trial for cable television, in which Bugliosi played the role of an attorney prosecuting Lee Harvey Oswald for murder, and how this formed the basis for the epic tome. Author James DiEugenio details the myriad problems with Bugliosi’s book, and explores the cooperation of the mainstream press in concealing many facts during the publicity campaign for the book and how this lack of scrutiny led Hanks and Goetzman—cofounders of the production company Playtone—to purchase the film rights. DiEugenio then shows how the film adapted from that book, entitled Parkland, does not resemble Bugliosi’s book and examines why. This book reveals the connections between Washington and Hollywood, as well as the CIA influence in the film colony today. It includes an extended look at the little-known aspects of the lives and careers of Bugliosi, Hanks, and Goetzman. Reclaiming Parkland sheds light on the Kennedy assassination, New Hollywood, and the political influence on media in America.

Download or read book In the Name of a Killer written by Brian Freemantle and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the Cold War, a brutal murder in a Moscow alley forces two rival agents together in a mission to catch a serial killer—before it’s too late Moscow is a bad place for an American to walk alone, particularly a woman as beautiful as Ann Harris. An economist in the American embassy, she thinks she knows the town. She thinks she is safe. She’s wrong. Colonel Dimitri Danilov is irritated that Harris had to die on his watch. The peculiarities of the murder promise an interesting case, but American involvement will make everything needlessly complicated. Gumming up the works is William Cowley, the head of the FBI Russian desk, whose job is to keep men like Danilov from sweeping the murders of Americans under the rug. But as a serial killer terrorizes Moscow, the two must work together to thwart not only the killer, but also the corrupt city that protects him. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Brian Freemantle including rare photos from the author’s personal collection. In the Name of a Killer is the first book in the Cowley and Danilov Thrillers, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kit Marshall has bounced back from her first brush with the law, when she was suspected of murdering her senator boss. Now she is working for a freshman congresswoman, Maeve Dixon, a young Gulf War veteran representing North Carolina. It's February, and Kit is feeling out of sorts. A government shutdown has just been announced, wreaking havoc on the Hill, and Dan, Dixon's chief of staff and Kit's supervisor, is an inexperienced lightweight flying blind. Then there's Kit's distracted live-in boyfriend, Doug, who doesn't seem any closer to popping the question. Kit's best friend Meg is up to her eyeballs with her new beau and oversight committee job, and Clarence the beagle mix will certainly not win Capitol Canine if Meg has to campaign for him all by herself. Bad as things are now, they are about to get much worse. Early one morning Representative Dixon is caught standing over the corpse of Jack Drysdale, the Speaker of the House's top staffer, a man she argued with in front of the press the day before. The murder weapon was the Speaker's gavel. This item was entrusted to Dixon at the time, leading the police to believe they've found their killer. To save her job, Kit must clear her boss's name, and quickly. Dixon's career may be over if the police declare her a suspect or an anonymous blogger known as Hill Rat breaks the story. Solving this murder will test Kit's courage and all her fledgling powers of deduction as she roams a spooky, sparsely populated Capitol Hill looking for clues and sounding out suspects. Book 2 of the Washington Whodunit series, which began with Stabbing in the Senate.

Book excerpt: In this updated and revised edition, James DiEugenio dissects the new Oscar-nominated film, The Post, and how it disingenuously represents the Pentagon Papers saga, to the detriment of the true heroes of the operation. The story of the film stems from the failed attempt of Academy Award–winning actor Tom Hanks and producer Gary Goetzman to make Vincent Bugliosi’s mammoth book about the Kennedy assassination, Reclaiming History, into a miniseries. He exposes the questionable origins of Reclaiming History in a dubious mock trial for cable television, in which Bugliosi played the role of an attorney prosecuting Lee Harvey Oswald for murder, and how this formed the basis for the epic tome. Download or read book Vicious Circuits written by Joseph Jonghyun Jeon and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December of 1997, the International Monetary Fund announced the largest bailout package in its history, aimed at stabilizing the South Korean economy in response to a credit and currency crisis of the same year. Vicious Circuits examines what it terms "Korea's IMF Cinema," the decade of cinema following that crisis, in order to think through the transformations of global political economy at the end of the American century. It argues that one of the most dominant traits of the cinema that emerged after the worst economic crisis in the history of South Korea was its preoccupation with economic phenomena. As the quintessentially corporate art form—made as much in the boardroom as in the studio—film in this context became an ideal site for thinking through the global political economy in the transitional moment of American decline and Chinese ascension. With an explicit focus of state economic policy, IMF cinema did not just depict the economy; it also was this economy's material embodiment. That is, it both represented economic developments and was itself an important sector in which the same pressures and changes affecting the economy at large were at work. Joseph Jonghyun Jeon's window on Korea provides a peripheral but crucial perspective on the operations of late US hegemony and the contradictions that ultimately corrode it.

Plot summaries, names of major characters, and location lists are also presented. Similarly, the biographical section demonstrates the wide range of journalists, politicians, society women, and freelance writers who were motivated to write about the city."--BOOK JACKET.
