Book excerpt: "Ranching in the Tetons" is the story of murder, kidnapping, rustling, romance and raucous acts of nature. Zackary Waterman's Circle W Ranch and the Bar B Ranch of Jedidiah Berg are adjoining ranches in a high Valley of the Teton Mountain Range. The beauty of the high mountain valley masks activity of rustlers and high winds that damage buildings and take lives. Snow storms and blizzards strand ranchers and livestock. But when one ranch hand dies it looks like more is at play than just Mother Nature. Follow the romance of Jed and Zac from college days to the present. Read the chilling story of Debbie Hawks, a young woman from South Dakota, that solves the murder of a ranch hand. James Berger is a retired, 86 year old Engineer/Manager who writes family histories, life stories & books. He also loves photography, woodworking and fly fishing. James grew up on a ranch in Teton Valley, Idaho where he was helping his father with ranch work by age 11. He used a tractor to plow and prepare the soil for planting oats used to feed horses and other livestock on their ranch as well as mowing hay and helping to gather, bale or stack it. During his life he has witnessed the end of horse power use on farms and ranches. James has been a photographer for as long as he can remember, acquiring over 6000 images of family and the outdoors in Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, Montana, and Washington. His favorite pastime since his retirement in 1997 has been to photograph the Teton Mountain Range from near too far, east to west, and north to south. He has sold some of his photographs, but places family and friends ahead of paying customers. James spent nearly 39 years working as an Engineer/Manager in the nuclear industry. During that time he wrote over 18 technical papers that were accepted for journal publication and oral presentation, largely at Professional Society Meetings. He traveled to England, Scotland, Switzerland, France and Germany for the presentation of these papers. His technical writing includes books, documents, and reports. His wife, Blythe Berger, a retired middle school teacher, helped James make the transition from technical to fiction and non-fiction writing, and she edits his books. James started writing about his experiences growing up in Teton Valley Idaho at an early age. He expanded by writing travel logs for major travel events including foreign travel for business. One of his favorite travel subjects is the Palouse area encompassing parts of Washington and Idaho. This is an area formed by the "Great Flood" and dust storms occurring over millions of years. The results are miles and miles of rolling hills of fertile soil where wheat and other legumes are grown depending primarily on rain for moisture.

Book Beloved Enemies

  • Author : David P. Barash
  • Publisher : Prometheus Books
  • Release : 2011-07-06
  • ISBN : 1615926151
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Beloved Enemies written by David P. Barash and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-07-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do the fractious groups of Arabs and Israelis actually need each other? Can the Pentagon find new enemies to replace the USSR? Are married couples held together by a shared sense of enmity toward outside parties and even each other? Who is more likely to cultivate enemies - men or women? Is the "devil" a created enemy? Is the need for enemies psychological, sociological, or biological? These and other fascinating questions are explored by David P. Barash as he skillfully combines findings from biology, psychology, sociology, politics, history, and even literature to shed new and unexpected light on the human condition. Barash also offers startling and controversial observations about who we are as human beings and why we seem to thrive on adversarial relationships. He argues that we create and perpetuate our "enemy system" by "passing the pain along" - from child abuse to ethnic antagonism. We may well harbor a vestigial "Neanderthal mentality," which induces us to behave in ways that were adaptive in our evolutionary past but which have broad and even global implications today. Beloved Enemies concludes with a hopeful message: We can overcome, not simply our enemies, but our need to have enemies, and our penchant for creating them. To those who seek a better understanding of the nature of conflict and to those who remain confident that we can find answers to seemingly endless and complex antagonisms, Beloved Enemies offers much food for thought.

Book excerpt: The pleasant atmosphere at a dude ranch darkens with the unwelcome appearance of an ex-Hollywood western star who enjoys causing trouble. Money issues, secrets from the past, and a star-struck young woman provide plenty of motives for the Sheriff when a murder occurs. "The dude ranch was well-run-the scenery was magnificent-but suggestions of tragedy were in the clear mountain air. The appearance of Spike Noland, "Lothario of the Lariat" and ex-Hollywood actor, brought to light secrets hidden for many years. An old murder charge in which the ranch owner had been involved draws guests and friends into the circle of events, as Noland lives up to his reputation as a 'bad' performer. A smoothly written mystery, its plot is completely developed and its characters are neither bizarre nor trite." (F.A.P., Rochester, NY, Democrat and Chronicle, 1955) Murder in Jackson Hole was first published in 1955. For additional classic crime fiction, visit CoachwhipBooks.com.
