Book Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Technology in Japan

Download or read book Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Technology in Japan written by Sotaro Higuchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-19 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan was ahead of the rest of the world when it introduced intermediate processing of municipal waste by such means as incineration in the 1960s. Owing to the small land area of the country and the difficulty in securing landfill sites, the incineration ratio of municipal combustible waste had reached 100% by the 1990s. Along with the landfill of incineration residues, proprietary technologies such as high salt leachate treatment, desalination treatment, by-product recycling, a focus on the resource of incineration residues, sea surface landfill sites, and covered type landfill sites have spread and developed since then. This book describes the introduction of incineration facilities starting in the 1960s, landfill technology, and issues arising after 1990 following the introduction of the facilities. The necessity of a total system from incineration to landfill is explained as well. The volume is a valuable resource for countries that plan to introduce intermediate processing such as incineration and for countries that are developing a waste management policy.

Book Institutional Mechanisms for Sustainable Sanitation

Download or read book Institutional Mechanisms for Sustainable Sanitation written by Kazushi Hashimoto and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though access to sanitation facilities has improved in the urban areas of many Asian developing countries, the pollution of public water bodies remains a serious problem. One of the causes of water pollution is improper decentralized wastewater management. This study explains the evolution of Japan's decentralized wastewater management system and extracts elements that may be useful in developing countries. These elements include the establishment of a qualification and training system for decentralized wastewater treatment facility installation businesses; the introduction of a regular desludging system; the establishment of a qualification and training system for desludging business/workers; and the establishment of a qualification and examination system for operators of PAWTPs or similar facilities mainly targeted for non-household users.

Book Municipal Solid Waste Management in Asia and the Pacific Islands

Download or read book Municipal Solid Waste Management in Asia and the Pacific Islands written by Agamuthu Pariatamby and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid waste management issues, technologies and challenges are dynamic. More so, in developing and transitory nations in Asia. This book, written by Asian experts in solid waste management, explores the current situation in Asian countries including Pacific Islands. There are not many technical books of this kind, especially dedicated to this region of the world. The chapters form a comprehensive, coherent investigation in municipal solid waste (MSW) management, including, definitions used, generation, sustainable waste management system, legal framework and impacts on global warming. Several case studies from Asian nations are included to exemplify the real situation experienced. Discussions on MSW policy in these countries and their impacts on waste management and minimization (if any) are indeed an eye-opener. Undoubtedly, this book would be a pioneer in revealing the latest situation in the Asian region, which includes two of the world’s most dynamic nations in the economic growth. It is greatly envisaged to form an excellent source of reference in MSW management in Asia and Pacific Islands. This book will bridge the wide gap in available information between the developed and transitory/developing nations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume represents the culmination of nearly three years of planning, organizing and carrying out of a NATO Ad vanced Study Institute on Biomass Utilization. The effort was initi ated by Dr. Harry Sobel, then Editor of Biosources Digest, and a steering committee representing the many disciplines that this field brings together. . When the fiscal and logistical details of the original plan could not be worked out, the idea was temporarily suspended. In the spring of 1982, the Renewable Materials Institute of the State University of New York at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York revived the plan. A number of modifications had to be made, including the venue which was changed from the U.S.A. to Portugal. Additional funding beyond the basic support provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO had to be obtained. Ul timately there were supplementary grants from the Foundation for Microbiology and the Anne S. Richardson Fund to assist student participants. The New York State College of Forestry Foundation, Inc. provided major support through the Renewable Ma terials Institute. The ASI was held in Alcabideche, Portugal from September 26 to October 9, 1982. Eighty participants including fifteen principal lecturers were assembled at the Hotel Sintra Estoril for the program that was organized as a comprehensive course on biomass utilization. The main lectures were supplemented by relevant short papers offered by the participants.
