Book The Municipal Financial Crisis

Download or read book The Municipal Financial Crisis written by Mark Moses and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-06 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: City governments are going bankrupt. Even the ones that aren’t are often stuck in financial chaos. It is easy to blame pensions, poor leadership, or a bad economy. But the problems go much deeper. With decades of experience in local government, author Mark Moses showcases the inside world of the city decision-making process that has spawned these crises. It becomes clear: City governments are maxing out their budgets because they are trying to maximize services. This book, likely the most ambitious attempt by someone who has worked in government to radically examine the delivery of municipal services since 'Reinventing Government' was published more than 25 years ago, explores why city governments pursue an open-ended mission and why bailouts and trendy budgeting processes will be, at best, only temporary solutions. Of interest to current and future city council members, regional and state government officials, those covering city government, financial analysts, city management, and individuals and organizations interested in influencing city policy, this book argues that cities won’t thrive until city hall is disrupted.

Book Metropolitan City Expenditures

Download or read book Metropolitan City Expenditures written by Roy W. Bahl and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of the structure of core city expenditures, Mr. Bahl analyzes the functional relationship between per capita expenditures and selected economic, demographic, and sociological factors. He finds that the problems central to intercity variations in per capita spending are directly related to the coordination of fiscal and physical planning and that economic and social areas, not corporate boundaries, represent the most appropriate planning units. Mr. Bahl extends the static analysis of the pioneering work of Harvey Brazer to a comparative static and temporal context, comparing through regression techniques the factors underlying per capita variations in 198 Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area cities, from 1950 to 1960. His results suggest that the different levels may be primarily attributed to interactions between the central city and the urban fringe and to disparities in the dependence on inter-government revenues.
