Book excerpt: This report details research conducted on the Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator (MACS) system during the third year of a three-year system development contract. The MACS system is a low-cost, computer-based, part-task weapons trainer that was initially developed to facilitate the teaching of rifle marksmanship, but has the potential to train soldiers on other weapons. It comprises a weapon (e.g., an M16 rifle) with a light pen attached to the barrel and a Commodore 64 computer. Targets are displayed on the computer screen at specified ranges; the user may zero the weapon and then practice marksmanship. Diagnostic feedback is provided. The system has been validated as a teaching device. Research in the third year of the contract has focused on software development in four areas: (1) a 10-level Basic Rifle Marksmanship (BRM) cartridge, (2) an 8-level Advanced Rifle Marksmanship (ARM) cartridge, (3) preliminary development of a cartridge for unit rifle marksmanship training, and (4) development of a program for the M136 anti-armor weapon (AT-4). Hardware modifications involved improvements to the light pen, light pen mount, and trigger switch. Development of MACS software programs involved the Light Antitank Weapon (LAW), trigger squeeze, and ARM. A major redesign of the BRM diagnostics program was completed.

Book excerpt: This report provides details of the effort (February to December 1991) to produce a Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator (MACS) program for the M16 rifle with telescope (Ml6A3). Because the Army delayed selection of a telescope, all aspects of the program could not be completed; programs were developed using the telescope reticle with the highest probability of selection. The program may be fired with telescope or iron sights. It reviews basic marksmanship, the long-range engagement of stationary and moving targets, the effects of wind, and the combined effects of range, wind, and target movement.

Book excerpt: Limited experimental evaluations were performed on the Multipurpose Arcade Combat Simulator (MACS) configured for the M16 Rifle, M203 Grenade Launcher, and M72A2 Light Antitank Weapon. Computer training programs were written for each configuration and field tested using soldiers undergoing One Station Unit Training (OSUT). The results indicate that MACS training, when given prior to live fire instruction, may give soldiers a head start on acquiring marksmanship skills. In these studies in which the MACS training was limited to a brief exposure prior to live-fire training, there was a trend for the experimental groups to hit more targets and to place live rounds closer to the center of mass of the target, especially on the farther targets.
