The purpose of the course was to discuss as far as possible all known symmetries in nuclei, with special emphasis on dynamical symmetries. Since there was no comprehensive account of this subject in the literature, I was encouraged to write a review based on my lecture notes. The end result is the present volume. Like the course, the book is intended mainly for graduate students and research workers in nuclear physics. The only prior knowledge required to follow the book is graduate-level quantum mechanics and nuclear physics and hence I believe that it can be useful to both experimental and theoretical nuclear physicists. In addition, the book should prepare a student to read the latest literature on the subject and also train him to do group theoretic work in nuclear physics. The organization of the material in the book is described in Chapter 1.

Book excerpt: My previous book on the theory of atomic spectra was published in Russian about fifteen years ago. Besides the traditional problems usually included in a book on atomic spectroscopy, some other problems arising in various applications of spectroscopic methods were also discussed in the book. These include, for example, continuous spectrum radiation, excitation of atoms, and spectral line broadening. Extensive revisions were made in the English version of the book published by the Pergamon Press in 1972, especially in the chapter devoted to the problem of excitation of atoms. This book is intended as the first part of a two-volume presentation of the theory of atomic spectra, atomic radiative transitions, excitation of atoms, and spectral line broadening. The aim in preparing these new books has been to stress the problems connected with the most interesting applications of atomic spectroscopy to plasma diagnostics, astrophysics, laser physics, and other fields, which have been developed very intensively in recent years. The content of this first volume, devoted to the systematics of atomic spectra and radiative transitions, is similar to that of Chapters 1-6, 8 and 9 of the old book, but considerable revision has been made. Some sections, such as those on the Hartree-Fock method, the Dirac equation, and relativistic corrections, have been deleted. At the same time, more attention is paid to radiative transitions. More extensive tables of oscillator strengths, prob abilities, and effective cross sections of radiative transitions in discrete and continuous spectra are given.

Our initial aim of charting the field of nuclear physics with some regularity and completeness is, hopefully, beginning to be established. By means of the "stream" technique on which our series is based - in which articles emerge from a flow of future articles at the convenience of the authors-the articles appear in this volume without any special coordination of topics. The topics range from the interaction of pions with nuclei to direct reactions in deformed nuclei. There is a great number of additional topics which the series hopes to include. Some of these are indicated by our list of future articles. Some have so far not appeared on our list because the topics have been reviewed re cently in other channels. Much of our series has originated from the sug gestions of our colleagues. We continue to welcome such aid and we continue to need, particularly, more suggestions about experimentalists who might write articles on experimental topics.
