Book Multipoint Aerial Refueling A Review and Assessment

Download or read book Multipoint Aerial Refueling A Review and Assessment written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Air Force currently relies principally on boom-and- receptacle technology to conduct aerial-refueling operations for fixed-wing aircraft. With this approach, a single aircraft at a time may be refueled behind a tanker. An alternative concept, called multipoint aerial refueling, uses probe-and-drogue technology to enable more than one fighter aircraft to aerially refuel simultaneously from a tanker. Advocates of a transition to multipoint aerial refueling describe multipoint's benefits as follows: greater flexibility and interoperability of U.S. forces, and the possibility of budgetary savings resulting from the smaller tanker inventory that could be required. Several studies in recent years have addressed the efficacy of multipoint aerial refueling for fighter-employment operations. Not surprisingly, since each study used different analytic approaches and assumptions, the results of the studies have varied. I reviewed five of these studies to understand the reasons for the differences among them and to determine whether any general conclusions could be drawn about the desirability of equipping U.S. tanker aircraft with the multipoint aerial-refueling capability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO assessed the performance of the air refueling tanker force during Operation Desert Storm. GAO found that: (1) in late 1990, the Air Force initiated a tactical air refueling standardization package; (2) the cost to modify 3,000 F-15 and F-16 fighters and 250 tankers could be offset by the retirement of 26 KC-135 tankers; (3) the tactical air refueling initiative is intended to increase efficiency, effectiveness, interoperability, and safety during multiservice air operations; (4) the Air Force has significantly downsized and restructured the refueling initiative; (5) the assumptions used in an air staff multipoint utility study were not well founded and understated the benefits of twin off-load points; (6) the technical and operational concerns about retrofitting fighters with probes have been exaggerated; (7) the Air Force is satisfied with its refueling system and is unwilling to commit its resources to a different refueling system; (8) Desert Storm air refueling operations confirmed the advantages of multipoint refueling and pointed out additional benefits during air space-constrained operations; (9) retrofitting 15 KC-10 aircraft with twin off-load points may not be cost-effective if the Air Force does not add probes to its fighter aircraft; and (10) the Air Force is proposing to address Navy air refueling requirements by adding multipoint refueling capabilities to 75 KC-135 tankers.

Book excerpt: Briefing reports on multi-vehicle wind tunnel tests conducted by Bihrle to obtain interaction data between a KC-135 tanker and a UAV receiver. The data will be used to develop a refueling simulation to evaluate controllability and preliminary automated designs for UAV refueling. The briefing discusses use of this data with a combination of automatic refueling and collision avoidance. This is very preliminary data on interactions. It has military application for advanced UAV refueling.

Book Defense Science Board Task Force report on aerial refueling requirements

Download or read book Defense Science Board Task Force report on aerial refueling requirements written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerial refueling capabilities are an essential enabler of U.S. power projection and other critic at national missions. OPERATIONS ENDURING and IRAQI FREEDOM (OEF and OIF) could not have happened without these aerial refueling capabilities. Aerial refueling makes possible rapid deployment of forces to contingencies and the elective employment of those forces in the contingencies. In OIF there were over 8500 aerial refueling sorties flown and about 450 million pounds of fuel off loaded. In addition, aerial refueling remains a critical element in supporting the bomber leg of U.S. nuclear forces and other special national security missions. The task force was charged to evaluate current aerial refueling capability and to identify and evaluate alternative means of meeting future aerial refueling requirements.
