Book Multiple Criteria Analysis for Agricultural Decisions

Download or read book Multiple Criteria Analysis for Agricultural Decisions written by Carlos Romero and published by Elsevier Science Limited. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recognition given to the existence of multiple objectives in agricultural decision making, very little seems to have been done by agricultural economists to develop and use methodologies that model the decision situations realistically. This is particularly intriguing when one notices the amount of effort that has been devoted to the development and use of multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques in disciplines such as management science, water resources research and forest planning. There are virtually no (text) books available in agricultural economics which explain the nature and structure of MCDM techniques and demonstrate how they can be used to model decisions involving multiple objectives. There is a need for such a book and this book attempts to fill the gap. It is divided into three parts. The first, comprising two chapters, is philosophical in nature and deals with the rationale behind the use of multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques in decision making, and the fundamental concepts that must be understood to grasp the nature of these methods. The second and largest part contains five chapters, each dealing with the logical structure of a specific MCDM technique, and how it is used to model a particular decision problem. Some applications to agricultural problems are presented in the last five chapters contained in the final part. The book is designed to be used both as a reference and a text. An understanding of the conceptual basis of most of the MCDM techniques presented here should not be beyond those with basic knowledge of linear algebra and linear programming.

Book Social Multi Criteria Evaluation for a Sustainable Economy

Download or read book Social Multi Criteria Evaluation for a Sustainable Economy written by Giuseppe Munda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-22 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main novelties of this book is its establishment of a clear relationship between social and public choice on one hand and multiple criteria decision analysis on the other. This relationship leads to the new concept of Social Multi-Criteria Evaluation (SMCE). SMCE is proposed as a policy framework to integrate different scientific languages, for example, when concerns about civil society and future generations have to be considered along with policy imperatives and market conditions.

Book Geographical Information Systems for Urban and Regional Planning

Download or read book Geographical Information Systems for Urban and Regional Planning written by Henk J. Scholten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1989, a Summer Institute was held at the Academie van Bouwkunst, the seventeenth century home of Amsterdam's School of Architecture, Town Planning and Landscape. The meeting brought together experts in Geographical Information Systems from throughout the world to address an international audience of planners. The contents of this book reflect many of the themes that were presented and discussed at the conference. The Summer Institute, let alone this volume, would not have been possible without the support of the International Association for the Development and Management of Existing and New Towns (INTNAIVN), the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISoCaRP), The National Physical Planning Agency of the Netherlands (RPD) and the Berlage Studio. We wish to acknowledge the assistance provided by these organisations and by the various sponsors: The Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning and Environment, the Municipality of Amsterdam, Logisterion b.v., ESRI, UNISYS, MABON b.v., SPSS, PRIME Computer Inc., PANDATA. The provision of hardware facilities by the various computer companies allowed immensely valuable 'hands on' experience to be gained by all the participants.

Book Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis

Download or read book Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis written by Valerie Belton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA), also termed multiple criteria decision aid, or multiple criteria decision making (MCDM), has developed rapidly over the past quarter century and in the process a number of divergent schools of thought have emerged. This can make it difficult for a new entrant into the field to develop a comprehensive appreciation of the range of tools and approaches which are available to assist decision makers in dealing with the ever-present difficulties of seeking compromise or consensus between conflicting inter ests and goals, i.e. the "multiple criteria". The diversity of philosophies and models makes it equally difficult for potential users of MCDA, i.e. management scientists and/or decision makers facing problems involving conflicting goals, to gain a clear understanding of which methodologies are appropriate to their particular context. Our intention in writing this book has been to provide a compre hensive yet widely accessible overview of the main streams of thought within MCDA. We aim to provide readers with sufficient awareness of the underlying philosophies and theories, understanding of the practi cal details of the methods, and insight into practice to enable them to implement any of the approaches in an informed manner. As the title of the book indicates, our emphasis is on developing an integrated view of MCDA, which we perceive to incorporate both integration of differ ent schools of thought within MCDA, and integration of MCDA with broader management theory, science and practice.

Book Multicriteria Analysis and LCA Techniques

Download or read book Multicriteria Analysis and LCA Techniques written by Lucia Recchia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-03 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multicriteria Analysis and LCA Techniques introduces the reader to the basic principles of multicriteria analysis (MCA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) techniques. The use of these tools is rapidly becoming essential in any feasibility study for comparing different solutions, selecting the most suitable ones, and for analyzing the interface of economy and environment. The main feature of Multicriteria Analysis and LCA Techniques is the application of a new approach to the analysis of energy balance and environmental impact of agro-industrial production chains. It gives detailed descriptions of a number of food and non-food agro-industrial applications of MCA and LCA, thereby providing the reader with practical examples of the implementation of these tools in the field of agro-industry. Multicriteria Analysis and LCA Techniques represents a subsidiary reference book for both undergraduate and graduate students, and can also be used for basic or applied academic research.

Book Multiple Criteria Decision Making and its Applications to Economic Problems

Download or read book Multiple Criteria Decision Making and its Applications to Economic Problems written by Enrique Ballestero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Criteria Decision Making and its Applications to Economic Problems ties Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM)/Multiple Objective Optimization (MO) and economics together. It describes how MCDM methods (goal programming) can be used in economics. The volume consists of two parts. Part One of the book introduces the MCDM approaches. This first part, comprising Chapters 1-5, is basically an overview of MCDM methods that can most likely be used to address a wide range of economic problems. Readers looking for an in-depth discussion of multi-criteria analysis can grasp and become acquainted with the initial MCDM tools, language and definitions. Part Two, which comprises Chapters 6-8, focuses on the theoretical core of the book. Thus in Chapter 6 an economic meaning is given to several key concepts on MCDM, such as ideal point, distance function, etc. It illustrates how Compromise Programming (CP) can support the standard premise of utility optimisation in economics as well as how it is capable of approximating the standard utility optimum when the decision-makers' preferences are incompletely specified. Chapter 7 deals entirely with production analysis. The main characteristic throughout the Chapter refers to a standard joint production scenario, analysed from the point of view of MCDM schemes. Chapter 8 focuses on the utility specification problem in the n-arguments space within a risk aversion context. A link between Arrows' risk aversion coefficient and CP utility permits this task. The book is intended for postgraduate students and researchers in economics with an OR/MS orientation or in OR/MS with an economic orientation. In short, it attempts to fruitfully link economics and MCDM.
