Book Numerical Assessments of Cracks in Elastic Plastic Materials

Download or read book Numerical Assessments of Cracks in Elastic Plastic Materials written by Huang Yuan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book a systematic discussion of crack problems in elastic-plastic materials is presented. The state of the art in fracture mechanics research and assessment of cracks is documented, with the help of analytic, asymptotic methods as well as finite element computations. After a brief introduction to fracture mechanics, the two-parameter concept for stationary cracks is studied in addition to the issues in three-dimensional crack fields under coupling with strong out-of-plane effects. Cracks along interfaces and crack growth problems under mixed mode conditions are also treated. A systematic study of stress singularities for different notches is accompanied by detailed finite element computations.

Book Analysis of Multiple Cracks in an Infinite Functionally Graded Plate

Download or read book Analysis of Multiple Cracks in an Infinite Functionally Graded Plate written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general methodology was constructed to develop the fundamental solution for a crack embedded in an infinite non-homogeneous material in which the shear modulus varies exponentially with the y coordinate. The fundamental solution was used to generate a solution to fully interactive multiple crack problems for stress intensity factors and strain energy release rates. Parametric studies were conducted for two crack configurations. The model displayed sensitivity to crack distance, relative angular orientation, and to the coefficient of nonhomogeneity.Shbeeb, N. Download or read book Solution of Crack Problems written by D.A. Hills and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the numerical solution of crack problems. The techniques to be developed are particularly appropriate when cracks are relatively short, and are growing in the neighbourhood of some stress raising feature, causing a relatively steep stress gradient. It is therefore practicable to represent the geometry in an idealised way, so that a precise solution may be obtained. This contrasts with, say, the finite element method in which the geometry is modelled exactly, but the subsequent solution is approximate, and computationally more taxing. The family of techniques presented in this book, based loosely on the pioneering work of Eshelby in the late 1950's, and developed by Erdogan, Keer, Mura and many others cited in the text, present an attractive alternative. The basic idea is to use the superposition of the stress field present in the unfiawed body, together with an unknown distribution of 'strain nuclei' (in this book, the strain nucleus employed is the dislocation), chosen so that the crack faces become traction-free. The solution used for the stress field for the nucleus is chosen so that other boundary conditions are satisfied. The technique is therefore efficient, and may be used to model the evolution of a developing crack in two or three dimensions. Solution techniques are described in some detail, and the book should be readily accessible to most engineers, whilst preserving the rigour demanded by the researcher who wishes to develop the method itself.

Book Stress Intensity Factors in Two Bonded Elastic Layers Containing Cracks Perpendicular to and on the Interface Part 1

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors in Two Bonded Elastic Layers Containing Cracks Perpendicular to and on the Interface Part 1 written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic crack problem which is essential for the study of subcritical crack propagation and fracture of layered structural materials is considered. Because of the apparent analytical difficulties, the problem is idealized as one of plane strain or plane stress. An additional simplifying assumption is made by restricting the formulation of the problem to crack geometries and loading conditions which have a plane of symmetry perpendicular to the interface. The general problem is formulated in terms of a coupled system of four integral equations. For each relevant crack configuration of practical interest, the singular behavior of the solution near and at the ends and points of intersection of the cracks is investigated and the related characteristic equations are obtained. The edge crack terminating at and crossing the interface, the T-shaped crack consisting of a broken layer and a delamination crack, the cross-shaped crack which consists of a delamination crack intersecting a crack which is perpendicular to the interface, and a delamination crack initiating from a stress-free boundary of the bonded layers are some of the practical crack geometries considered. Book Crack Analysis in Structural Concrete

Download or read book Crack Analysis in Structural Concrete written by Zihai Shi and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2009-06-17 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book on the fracture mechanics of concrete focuses on the latest developments in computational theories, and how to apply those theories to solve real engineering problems. Zihai Shi uses his extensive research experience to present detailed examination of multiple-crack analysis and mixed-mode fracture.Compared with other mature engineering disciplines, fracture mechanics of concrete is still a developing field with extensive new research and development. In recent years many different models and applications have been proposed for crack analysis; the author assesses these in turn, identifying their limitations and offering a detailed treatment of those which have been proved to be robust by comprehensive use. After introducing stress singularity in numerical modelling and some basic modelling techniques, the Extended Fictitious Crack Model (EFCM) for multiple-crack analysis is explained with numerical application examples. This theoretical model is then applied to study two important issues in fracture mechanics - crack interaction and localization, and fracture modes and maximum loads. The EFCM is then reformulated to include the shear transfer mechanism on crack surfaces and the method is used to study experimental problems. With a carefully balanced mixture of theory, experiment and application, Crack Analysis in Structural Concrete is an important contribution to this fast-developing field of structural analysis in concrete. Book A Combined Boundary Integral Method for Crack Problems in Multilayered Elastic Media Under the Plane Strain Condition

Download or read book A Combined Boundary Integral Method for Crack Problems in Multilayered Elastic Media Under the Plane Strain Condition written by Gongbo Long and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crack problems in multilayered elastic media are of considerable interest in many engineering applications, particularly in hydraulic fracturing treatments for increasing hydrocarbon production. Various computational methods have been developed for the analysis of crack problems, and boundary integral methods stand out for their broad applicability and accuracy. Among various boundary integral methods the standard boundary integral method, such as the direct method, can be used for general elastic analysis of multilayered media, while the displacement discontinuity method based on fundamental dislocation solution is more suitable for the analysis of crack problems. The displacement discontinuity method, however, cannot be applied directly to the general crack problems in multilayered media due to the lack of fundamental dislocation solutions. In this dissertation study, we therefore address this issue by developing a new approach that combines the displacement discontinuity method and the direct method. The combined method shares both the efficiency of the displacement discontinuity method and the applicability of the direct method. In this combined method, the displacement discontinuity method is implemented to construct the fracture matrix in each layer, while the direct method is used to characterize the effects of the interfaces. As a consequence, all variables on the interfaces can be eliminated through continuity conditions, leading to the final equation which only consists of variables on crack surfaces. The concept of the crack tip element is also adopted and extended for better treatment of the crack tip singularity. The example studies have demonstrated that the combined method has comparable accuracy but far more efficiency for practical applications as compared to the traditional direct method.

Book Boundary Integral Equations in Elasticity Theory

Download or read book Boundary Integral Equations in Elasticity Theory written by A.M. Linkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by the author to the English edition The book aims to present a powerful new tool of computational mechanics, complex variable boundary integral equations (CV-BIE). The book is conceived as a continuation of the classical monograph by N. I. Muskhelishvili into the computer era. Two years have passed since the Russian edition of the present book. We have seen growing interest in numerical simulation of media with internal structure, and have evidence of the potential of the new methods. The evidence was especially clear in problems relating to multiple grains, blocks, cracks, inclusions and voids. This prompted me, when preparing the English edition, to place more emphasis on such topics. The other change was inspired by Professor Graham Gladwell. It was he who urged me to abridge the chain of formulae and to increase the number of examples. Now the reader will find more examples showing the potential and advantages of the analysis. The first chapter of the book contains a simple exposition of the theory of real variable potentials, including the hypersingular potential and the hypersingular equations. This makes up for the absence of such exposition in current textbooks, and reveals important links between the real variable BIE and the complex variable counterparts. The chapter may also help readers who are learning or lecturing on the boundary element method.
