Book Multilateralism Versus Unilateralism

Download or read book Multilateralism Versus Unilateralism written by Noële Crossley and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are various opinions on the relevance of the United Nations concerning the authorisation of the use of force. Idealists demand UN authorisation for any type of intervention and strict adherence to a narrow interpretation of international law. Realists have a more sceptical stance, arguing that international law and international institutions are only successful under specific circumstances. Neoconservatives defy international law and international institutions. These arguments are compared and then applied to several case studies. It is explained why unilateralist thinking is not viable; why the use of force in circumvention of the UN framework is never legal; and that cases where intervention is illegal but legitimate necessitate reform of international laws and institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the nature and implications of the fact that the major security, economic, and environmental challenges facing our global society today can be addressed in either of two broad ways: unilateral mechanisms and multilateral mechanisms. Multilateralism V Unilateralism draws together a most distinguished group of policymakers and academics to discuss and to debate the interaction in unilateral behavior in the context of the military, economics, the environment, and international organizations. When the tragedy of September 11 occurred, this volume was already well into the planning stage. The volume compares unilateral versus multilateral behavior in the above four areas. The issues presented in this volume represent some of the momentous and historic challenges facing our global society as we embark upon the 21st century.

Book The Best Laid Plans

Download or read book The Best Laid Plans written by Stewart Patrick and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2008-12-12 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-standing, but unresolved debate of the virtues and values of multilateralism vs. unilateralism in American foreign policy is critically important in today's complicated world. To understand the history of each approach is to understand their opportunities and challenges for the future. The Best Laid Plans answers two central questions. First, why did the United States embrace the principles and practices of liberal multilateralism during World War II? Second, why did it cling to this vision of world order despite the outbreak of the Cold War in the late 1940s, as the 'One World' that had been anticipated by U.S. postwar planners split into two rival global camps? The book contends that neither the U.S. turn to liberal multilateralism nor the persistence of this orientation during the Cold War can be attributed solely or even primarily to the global power structure or crude considerations of material self interest. Rather, Stewart Patrick argues that a combination of enduring identity commitments and new ideas, based on the lessons of recent, cataclysmic events, shaped the policy preferences of American central decision-makers in the Roosevelt and Truman administrations. Although the book is steeped in history, its conclusions have tremendous relevance for the contemporary era, when the United States once again finds itself at the apex of world power, and debates are rife about the role of multilateral cooperation in the realization of U.S. foreign policy objectives.

Book Unilateralism and U S Foreign Policy

Download or read book Unilateralism and U S Foreign Policy written by David Malone and published by Lynne Rienner Pub. This book was released on 2003 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the war on terrorism to global warming, from national missile defense to unilateral sanctions, the U.S. has been taken to task for coming on too strong-or for doing too little. This volume explores international reactions to U.S. conduct in world affairs. Authors from around the world address the tensions between unilateralism and multilateralism in U.S. foreign policy. Their careful analysis suggests that the U.S. inclination to go it alone may undermine not only long-term international support for U.S. leadership, but also the sustainability of valuable international institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Following a brief overview of the history of private international law (PIL) and a longer discussion of the nineteenth century (the first golden age of PIL), this volume offers a detailed and insightful review of the last fifty-year period in the international development of PIL (1970-2020), which is the book's main focus. At least in terms of legislative activity, this period may well be the new golden age of PIL, during which we have witnessed the enactment of 101 national or subnational PIL codifications or recodifications, and almost as many international or regional conventions and EU Regulations. These codifications and conventions provide a reliable gauge for assessing the progress of the discipline; they also form the basis for the comparative observations of this book. The first version of this text was published in the Collected Courses of the Hague Academy of International Law (the 2016 General Course on Private International Law or Conflicts Law). The current volume is an expanded, revised edition of that original text, offering In addition to general updating, two new chapters on party autonomy and on the challenges of the internet"--

Book Unilateralism and U S Foreign Policy

Download or read book Unilateralism and U S Foreign Policy written by Yuen Foong Khong and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has there been a new surge of American unilateralism? Why is the world fearful of a United States that goes it alone? What are the consequences, for both the United States and the world, of a unilateral America? This book seeks to answer these questions. Past discussions and debates among US contributors were sufficiently passionate as to suggest that a parallel investigation, this time by international scholars, about US approaches to multilateralism and unilateralism would prove illuminating.
