Book excerpt: The rapid development of wireless digital communication technology has cre ated capabilities that software systems are only beginning to exploit. The falling cost of both communication and of mobile computing devices (laptop computers, hand-held computers, etc. ) is making wireless computing affordable not only to business users but also to consumers. Mobile computing is not a "scaled-down" version of the established and we- studied field of distributed computing. The nature of wireless communication media and the mobility of computers combine to create fundamentally new problems in networking, operating systems, and information systems. Further more, many of the applications envisioned for mobile computing place novel demands on software systems. Although mobile computing is still in its infancy, some basic concepts have been identified and several seminal experimental systems developed. This book includes a set of contributed papers that describe these concepts and sys tems. Other papers describe applications that are currently being deployed and tested. The first chapter offers an introduction to the field of mobile computing, a survey of technical issues, and a summary of the papers that comprise sub sequent chapters. Book excerpt: Multihop mobile wireless networks is a subject of intense research interest for next generation wireless systems. As we move towards fourth generation (4G) networks, high data-rates of the order of 100 Mbps can be achieved only over short distances. A multihop network has smaller transmission distance as compared to an equivalent single-hop network. This enables the radio terminals that are spatially well-separated from each other to reuse the same resources when the resulting interferences are not too severe. In this dissertation, the multihop network design is studied for two different kinds of systems: multihop ad hoc network and multihop hybrid cellular network. In the first part of the thesis work, a multihop ad hoc network is analyzed in detail and the system capacity is computed. However, the calculation of optimal resource allocation that would maximize the system capacity is found to be an NP-hard problem. Considering this complexity, a random data hopping technique has been proposed over a time-slot (TS) partitioned system in order to improve the system capacity of the network. It has been found that the granularity of the TS(s) can be increased by reducing the duration of each TS. Significantly, applying the random data hoping technique over the TS partitioned system results in an increase in the system capacity without any additional increase in the computational complexity. In the second part of the thesis work, a multihop hybrid cellular network is studied. It is known that optimal resource allocation in a multihop cellular network is again a NP-hard problem. A novel cluster-based design is proposed in this work for a 2-hop cellular network, whereby, two pairs communicate simultaneously in every hexagonal cell, at any time instant. Such a cluster-based 2-hop design provides an increase in the spatial resource reuse and hence results in a much higher system capacity as compared to three standard benchmark algorithms for 2-hop cellular networks.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, routing protocols, load-balancing protocols, and efficient evaluation techniques for multi-hop mobile wireless networks are explored. With the advancements made in wireless communication and computer technologies, a new type of mobile wireless network, known as a mobile ad hoc network (MANET), has drawn constant attention. In recent years, several routing protocols for MANETs have been proposed. However, there still remains the need for mechanisms for better scalability support with respect to network size, traffic volume, and mobility. To address this issue, a new method for multi-hop routing in MANETs called Dynamic NIx-Vector Routing (DNVR) is proposed. DNVR has several distinct features compared to other existing on-demand routing protocols, which lead to more stable routes and better scalability. Currently, ad hoc routing protocols lack load-balancing capabilities. Therefore they often fail to provide good service quality, especially in the presence of a large volume of network traffic since the network load concentrates on some nodes, resulting in a highly congested environment. To address this issue, a novel load-balancing technique for ad hoc on-demand routing protocols is proposed. The new method is simple but very effective in achieving load balance and congestion alleviation. In addition, it operates in a completely distributed fashion. To evaluate and verify wireless network protocols effectively, especially to test their scalability properties, scalable and efficient network simulation methods are required. Usually simulation of such large-scale wireless networks needs a long execution time and requires a large amount of computing resources such as powerful CPUs and memory. Traditionally, to cope with this problem, parallel network simulation techniques with parallel computing capabilities have been considered. This dissertation explores a different type of method, which is efficient and can be achieved with a sequential simulation, as well as a parallel and distributed technique for large-scale mobile wireless networks.
