Book Multicultural Picturebooks

Download or read book Multicultural Picturebooks written by Sylvia S. Marantz and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Picturebook," spelled as a single word to identify its unique qualities and to differentiate the genre from other books with illustrations, is one that tells a story either in pictures alone or in almost equal partnership with text. The picturebook has great potential for bridging the differences among us; the concept of a story is one common to all, a shared experience that sets the stage for communication. And the goal of multiculturalism is to emphasize the positive attributes of human society, the outstanding, rather than the stereotype. Because children born today will interact with people from different cultures much more than previous generations, it is important that they are taught about other cultures, starting at a young age. Multicultural picturebooks are, therefore, an excellent teaching tool for meeting this educational challenge. The picturebooks profiled are appropriate for children in grades K - 4 but can be used with older children, depending on the curriculum and the students' comprehension level. Books covering Asia and the Pacific, The Middle East, Africa, South America, North America (Native Americas, Inuit, etc.), and books specific to the immigrant experience are profiled. Each book is described in one paragraph that includes an engaging review of the story line, special features of the content, the look and style of the artwork, interior design, and layout of the book. The authors emphasize that the visual qualities of picturebooks affect their ability to tell stories about people whose values and behaviors are different from those of the reader. The analyses, therefore, used in selecting the books include not only the informational content, but also the emotional content--the feelings generated by the text and art. In choosing books for this volume, the authors have used the following criteria: ]Does the book tell an engaging story?]Do the illustrations convincingly portray and represent humans, animals, and objects?]Is the use of the media consistent?]Do the text and the pi

Book Multiculturalism and the Arts in European Cities

Download or read book Multiculturalism and the Arts in European Cities written by Marco Martiniello and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the tension, or even the contradiction, between ethno-cultural segregation and ethno-cultural mixing in the field of the arts. It focuses on the local artistic sphere in the multicultural EU cities of Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, Cologne, Malmö and Vienna. The chapters show a variety of local experiences by exploring in each city discourses, policies and practices in the local artistic field and by addressing one or more of the following questions: How do cities construct diversity discourses and policies? How do migrants and subsequent generations mobilise in the local artistic scene? What type of collective identities and ethnicities are publicly expressed and constructed in the arts? Are immigrant and ethnic artists and productions supported by official cultural institutions? Are local cultural policies becoming multicultural? How do migrant and ethnic artist mobilise in order to change cultural policies? The contributors combine top-down and bottom-up perspectives from a variety of large, mid-size and small European cities to make sense of the links between migrants and ethnic groups and artistic change at the local level. They examine how the city as an artistic space is changed by minority artistic expression and also how local cultural institutions change minority artistic expressions. The chapter authors are drawn from broad variety of disciplines, including anthropology, cultural studies, political science, sociology, urban studies and planning, offering the reader a broad variety of perspectives and insights into this area. This book was originally published as a special issue of Identities: Global Studies in Culture and Power.

Book Arts and Cultural Education in a World of Diversity

Download or read book Arts and Cultural Education in a World of Diversity written by Lígia Ferro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers, analyses, discusses and evaluates results of current research on arts and cultural education in Europe, focusing on the challenges of cultural diversity. Cultural diversity is an increasingly characteristic feature of contemporary societies. Groups with different ethnic, social or cultural backgrounds coexist, interact and merge. The challenges of cultural diversity – its innovative potential as well as tensions and conflicts – are reflected in transnational discourses on education, culture, democracy, and citizenship. Transcultural approaches, multicultural education, and intercultural learning are key concepts. The same challenges are reflected in arts and cultural education within and outside schools, in teachers’ and artists’ training, cultural and educational policies, and research. The thirteen chapters in this book report on nine countries represented in the European Network of Observatories in the Field of Arts and Cultural Education (ENO). They showcase good practices in research and teaching, foster the exchange of experiences, stimulate researchers and stakeholders and give insights into their professional practices.

Book excerpt: This book is suitable for ages 7 to 13 years. Sandi Henry introduces children to the seven basic elements of design that will help them to take a piece of art from " That`s Nice" to " Wow! " . These elements - line, shape, form, colour, value, texture, and space - are the building blocks that all artists use to create works from drawings and paintings to weaving and sculpture. Readers will see examples of how children their own age use elements of design in their work. And they will meet classic masters and contemporary artists whose individual works are based upon these same design techniques. It features: Grid Drawing - using a grid to divide images into smaller parts to reproduce a photograph or painting; Cut-out Collage - using free-form shapes cut from construction paper to create a colourful collage; Texture Rubbing - using the bumps, grooves, lines and other patterns to add interesting visual texture to artwork; Complementary Colour Puzzle - cutting and gluing shapes of complementary colours to create a striking abstract design; and, Supersize It! - Using a papier-mache to create an enlarged version of a common object.
