Book excerpt: A journal that condenses a number of study visits to the Bible Lands by Trevor Pitt, a theological educator and Christian Priest in the Anglican tradition. He is an exponent of reading the Bible with our feet. Reading the biblical texts in the actual place of their production helps the interpretation come alive in fresh, and often unexpected ways. It also allows us to be more patient with its meanings. It helps us to see the land of the Bible as the kind of place it really is, a small territory of seething hatreds and bitter divisions, belonging to, and sacred to, the three major faiths of the Abrahamic tradition. It helps us all to understand more deeply the mutli-faith world in which our lives and ministries are set. The basic nature of Christian faith is discovered on the way in dialogue with God and Jesus in the biblical narrative. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout with full colour pictures drawn in situ by Linda Birch.

Book Faith in the Nation

Download or read book Faith in the Nation written by Zaki Cooper and published by Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR). This book was released on 2008 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique collection brings together a group of senior faith leaders to express their views on Britishness, multiculturalism and the role of religion in the public realm. Our contributors explore whether religious affiliation aids or prevents a healthy process of cultural integration, and reflect on how their own communities have been received within, and have contributed to, British society. These are vital topics to air, particularly at a time when signs are emerging of a growing estrangement between the faith communities and an increasingly individualised, culturally diverse and fragmented society.

Book Religion in Higher Education

Download or read book Religion in Higher Education written by Sophie Gilliat-Ray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000. The place of religion in universities and institutes of higher education has become increasingly topical and contested in recent years, largely due to the growth of religious diversity on campus. Issues such as shared worship spaces, equal opportunities, and the management of inter-religious conflict, concern university administrators and students alike. Based on primary empirical research, this book indicates the need for clear guidelines on these issues and provides the data to inform policy-making. Offering the first study of the practical and sociological implications of the multi-faith campus, this book provides a context for examining some of the dynamics of religious diversity in Britain more generally as well as providing a useful analysis for the wider international context. Key themes covered include: religion in institutions; inter-faith relations; the changing roles of religious professionals; secularisation and resacralisation; and religion, youth and identity.

Book A Fresh Look at Islam in a Multi Faith World

Download or read book A Fresh Look at Islam in a Multi Faith World written by Matthew L.N. Wilkinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ***WINNER: Cheryl Frank Memorial Prize, International Association of Critical Realism.*** A Fresh Look at Islam in a Multi-Faith World provides a comprehensively theorised and practical approach to thinking systematically and deeply about Islam and Muslims in a multi-faith world. It makes the case for a contemporary educational philosophy to help young Muslims surmount the challenges of post-modernity and to transcend the hiatuses and obstacles that they face in their interaction and relationships with non-Muslims and visa-versa. It argues that the philosophy of critical realism in its original, dialectical and metaReal moments so fittingly ‘underlabours’ (Bhaskar, 1975) for the contemporary interpretation, clarification and conceptual deepening of Islamic doctrine, practice and education as to suggest a distinctive branch of critical realist philosophy, specifically suited for this purpose. This approach is called Islamic Critical Realism. The book proceeds to explain how this Islamic Critical Realist approach can serve the interpretation of the consensual elements of Islamic doctrine, such as the six elements of Islamic belief and the five ‘pillars’ of Islamic practice, so that these essential features of the Muslim way of life can help Muslim young people to contribute positively to life in multi-faith liberal democracies in a globalising world. Finally, the book shows how this Islamic Critical Realist approach can be brought to bear in humanities classrooms by history, religious education and citizenship teachers to help Muslim young people engage informatively and transformatively with themselves and others in multi-faith contexts.

Book Perceptions of Christianity from People of Different Faiths

Download or read book Perceptions of Christianity from People of Different Faiths written by Richard Tetlow and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a personal, searching and positive book. It is rooted in five perceptions of Christianity from people of different faiths and responses from five Christians. Richard Tetlow sees mutual, loving relationships as priority for human well-being in our British multifaith society. He shows how Christians can listen to and learn from others about themselves for common benefit. He analyses perceptions themselves, including perceptions of God, their whys and wherefores. He challenges traditional Christian theology, structures and worship. Throughout, he asks questions in search of meaning, sincere faith and honest personal experience, both religious and non-religious and seeks recognition of the unity and diversity of all Life. Finally, he suggests ways forward.

Book Reimagining Britain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Justin Welby
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2018-03-08
  • ISBN : 1472946065
  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book Reimagining Britain written by Justin Welby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby sets out a radical vision for 21st century Britain in this updated paperback edition. It is now three years since Justin Welby first published his Reimagining Britain. The fundamental message of that book remains as urgent as ever. But in this revised and expanded edition, Welby has taken fully into account the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit and all the social and political unrest that has ensued. If anything, the new edition of Archbishop Welby's book is even more important than its predecessor. Here is a radical vision for 21st century Britain. The thesis of this book is that the work of reimagining is as great as it was in 1945, and will happen either by accident – and thus badly – or deliberately. Welby explores the areas in which values are translated into action, including the traditional three of recent history: health (especially public, and mental), housing and education. To these he adds family; the environment; economics and finance; peacebuilding and overseas development; immigration; and integration. He looks particularly at the role of faith groups in enabling, and contributing to, a fairer future. When so many are immobilized by political turmoil, this book builds on our past to offer hope for the future, and practical ways of achieving a more equitable society.
