The objective was to achieve a broader, European perspective. For the acquisition of the information on which this book is based, we relied heavily on our colleagues abroad and their network of relations, since a great deal of factual data and information on the policies pursued is usually not available in a freely accessible form and can only be obtained through persons who know their way around. Eventually, in formation was provided by about seventy people (data administrators, policymakers at local and state level, politicians, academic researchers, representatives of interest groups, etc. ). The names of all people that contributed to this study are mentioned in the list of persons who were interviewed. Without wishing to wrong all these people, we especially want to thank the key informants who acted as intermediaries for following contacts. Lie casts light on a wide range of minority groups in modern Japanese society, including the Ainu, Burakumin (descendants of premodern outcasts), Chinese, Koreans, and Okinawans. The divide between the global economy’s winners and losers in today’s France has replaced the old left-right split, leaving many on “the periphery.” As Guilluy shows, there is no unified French economy, and those cut off from the country’s new economic citadels suffer disproportionately on both economic and social fronts. In Guilluy’s analysis, the lip service paid to the idea of an “open society” in France is a smoke screen meant to hide the emergence of a closed society, walled off for the benefit of the upper classes. The ruling classes in France are reaching a dangerous stage, he argues; without the stability of a growing economy, the hope for those excluded from growth is extinguished, undermining the legitimacy of a multicultural nation.

The research illuminates these relations, and addresses the different meanings that are attached to multi-cultural place and ethnic food. The theoretical exploration underpinning this thesis results in a social constructivist approach towards ethnic food and multi-ethnic place. Through combining these theories with ones more attentive towards cultural-material and geographical dimensions of food and place, a focus on meanings and experiences is combined with a focus on the active construction of associations between food, people and place. A neighbourhood in France called La Goutte d'Or serves as a case area. A combination of 18 semi-structured in depth interviews, numerous informal conversations and participant observation, is used to gain insights into, and explore the meanings of, and interrelations between ethnic food and place. The three main foci of the research are local food initiatives, local food commerce and local manifestations.
