Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Much more than euthanasia The evolution and core of the emerging right to die with dignity in Colombia

Download or read book Much more than euthanasia The evolution and core of the emerging right to die with dignity in Colombia written by Lucas Correa-Montoya and published by DescLAB. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication has four objectives which are pursued in three chapters. First, it synthesizes and describes the emergence of the right to die with dignity in Colombia, analyzing how it was born, how it has evolved, and how it has been consolidated in recent decades, proposing a genealogy of the process that allows us to understand and communicate it. Second, it reflects on the law as an instrument of social change: it uses the path of the emergence and evolution of the right to die with dignity as a successful case—despite its difficulties and limitations. These two objectives are developed in the first chapter. Third, the publication examines Colombia's current state of the right to die with dignity. It explains its legal nature and core obligations and discusses the mechanisms available to exercise it and the criteria that must be met to access them. The second chapter develops this objective. Finally, in the conclusion of the text, it identifies the challenges that we will face in the future, not only in Colombia but also in Latin America, when it comes to the right to die with dignity, that is, the recognition, expansion, and deepening of the possibility of making free and autonomous decisions about the end of life.

Book Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide

Download or read book Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide written by Michael J. Cholbi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses key historical, scientific, legal, and philosophical issues surrounding euthanasia and assisted suicide in the United States as well as in other countries and cultures. Euthanasia was practiced by Greek physicians as early as 500 BC. In the 20th century, legal and ethical controversies surrounding assisted dying exploded. Many religions and medical organizations led the way in opposition, citing the incompatibility of assisted dying with various religious traditions and with the obligations of medical personnel toward their patients. Today, these practices remain highly controversial both in the United States and around the world. Comprising contributions from an international group of experts, this book thoroughly investigates euthanasia and assisted suicide from an interdisciplinary and global perspective. It presents the ethical arguments for and against assisted dying; highlights how assisted dying is perceived in various cultural and philosophical traditions—for example, South and East Asian cultures, Latin American perspectives, and religions including Islam and Christianity; and considers how assisted dying has both shaped and been shaped by the emergence of professionalized bioethics. Readers will also learn about the most controversial issues related to assisted dying, such as pediatric euthanasia, assisted dying for organ transplantation, and "suicide tourism," and examine concerns relating to assisted dying for racial minorities, children, and the disabled.

Book Social Rights Judgments and the Politics of Compliance

Download or read book Social Rights Judgments and the Politics of Compliance written by Malcolm Langford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few decades have witnessed an explosion of judgments on social rights around the world. However, we know little about whether these rulings have been implemented. Social Rights Judgments and the Politics of Compliance is the first book to engage in a comparative study of compliance of social rights judgments as well as their broader effects. Covering fourteen different domestic and international jurisdictions, and drawing on multiple disciplines, it finds significant variance in outcomes and reveals both spectacular successes and failures in making social rights a reality on the ground. This variance is strikingly similar to that found in previous studies on civil rights, and the key explanatory factors lie in the political calculus of defendants and the remedial framework. The book also discusses which strategies have enhanced implementation, and focuses on judicial reflexivity, alliance building and social mobilisation.

Book Women s Writing in Colombia

Download or read book Women s Writing in Colombia written by Cherilyn Elston and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Montserrat Ordóñez Prize 2018 This book provides an original and exciting analysis of Colombian women’s writing and its relationship to feminist history from the 1970s to the present. In a period in which questions surrounding women and gender are often sidelined in the academic arena, it argues that feminism has been an important and intrinsic part of contemporary Colombian history. Focusing on understudied literary and non-literary texts written by Colombian women, it traces the particularities of Colombian feminism, showing how it has been closely entwined with left-wing politics and the country’s history of violence. This book therefore rethinks the place of feminism in Latin American history and its relationship to feminisms elsewhere, challenging many of the predominant critical paradigms used to understand Latin American literature and culture.

Book Identity in Narrative

Download or read book Identity in Narrative written by Anna De Fina and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-10-27 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents both an analysis of how identities are built, represented and negotiated in narrative, as well as a theoretical reflection on the links between narrative discourse and identity construction. The data for the book are Mexican immigrants' personal experience narratives and chronicles of their border crossings into the United States. Embracing a view of identity as a construct firmly grounded in discourse and interaction, the author examines and illustrates the multiple threads that connect the local expression and negotiation of identity to the wider social contexts that frame the experience of migration, from material conditions of life in the United States to mainstream discourses about race and color. The analysis reveals how identities emerge in discourse through the interplay of different levels of expression, from implicit adherence to narrative styles and ways of telling, to explicit negotiation of membership categories.
