Download or read book Mudr s in Buddhist and Hindu Practices written by Fredrick W. Bunce and published by D.K. Print World Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mudras occupy an important place in Buddhist and Hindu religious practices as these signify special meanings, associated with specific divinities and rites, which cannot be represented any other way. This book is a dictionary of mudras in Hindu and Buddhist religious practices that lists the various mudras - deity-centred, rite-centred, yogic-centred, and so on - illustrating each with a simple drawing drawn generally from the perspective of one holding the mudra. It contains detailed notes that give numerous references to literary and other sources that reveal a lot about the mudras - their descriptions in the texts, rites associated with the mudras in the texts as well as the varied interpretations of a number of mudras in the different texts. The book also has an introduction on Hindu and Buddhist mudras that goes into iconographic features associated with deities along with the technical descriptions and the subcategories and further divisions into which mudras are arranged. It scrutinises the work done by a number of scholars on the subject to throw further light on the subject. The volume will prove indispensable to all students and scholars who are engaged in study of Hindu and Buddhist religious traditions and practices.

Book excerpt: The book is the first comprehensive and illustrated treasury of esoteric mudras in the English language. Mudras in Japan by Lokesh Chandra and his late wife Sharada Rani is a collection of symbolic hand postures used in the rituals of Japanese Esoteric Buddhism of the Shingon denomination. The mudras have been an integral part of Buddhist iconography as well as of ritual. In Tantric rituals, the recitation of a mantra was accompanied by a mudra, and a ritual action. In the Mahavairocana-sutra, mudras are vital constituents of worship and meditation. Japan has the earliest manuscript of the mudras. The most ancient scroll is from the pen of Subhakarasimha of Nalanda, who lived from 637 to 735. The copy at the Onjoji monastery is dated 855. Another manuscript dated 864 has Mudras of the Susiddhi-tantra.

Download or read book Inner and Outer Meanings of Buddhism written by Singh M Parashar and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhas concept of no self is correct and superior to the old Hindu concept of a permanent, eternal, and unchanging self. God, freedom of will, immortality, and the law of karma (moral retribution) are the things-in-themselves. These things-in-themselves belong to the transcendent realm of noumena. These things are not governed by the causal chain of the world of senses. The outer meanings of many concepts of Buddhism are different from their inner meanings. Mind is a physical thing like mercury, and human body is like a glass tube containing mercury. Mind is active as well as passive. Existence is prior to essence. There is no transcendent aesthetic. There is only a phenomenal aesthetic. The sense of space is created by the inverse square law. The light of the absolute goes on decreasing as we move from a mother to the family, from the family to the society, and from the society to the state. According to the inner meanings, the twelve links of the dependent origination are actually made of three separate and independent chains. Nirvana and many other concepts of Buddhism are unknowable and inconceivable. An attempt has been made to make the inconceivable concepts as conceivable.

Featuring more than one hundred paintings, sculptures, and ritual objects, this superbly illustrated volume reflects the dazzling complexities of the Tibetan imagery that has provided a foundation for mandalas through the centuries. Most notably, a mesmerizing installation by the Tibetan American artist Tenzing Rigdol (b. 1982), specially created for the accompanying exhibition and published here for the first time, offers contemporary audiences a way of interrogating and understanding their world and underscores how this ancient tradition remains a vibrant living practice.
