Download or read book The Body and Senses in Martial Culture written by H.L.L Loh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ethnographic study of a mixed martial arts gym in Thailand describes the everyday practices and lived experiences of martial art practitioners. Through the lived realities and everyday experiences of these fighters, this book seeks to examine why foreigners invest their time and money to train in martial arts in Thailand; the linkages between the embodiment of martial arts and masculinity; how foreign bodies consume martial arts and what they get out of it; the sensory reconfiguration required of a fighter; and the impact of transnational flows on bodily dispositions and knowledge. The author argues that being a successful fighter entails not only sensitized awareness and knowledge of one’s body, but also a reconfiguration of the senses.

Book Rootlines

Download or read book Rootlines written by Rikki West and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rikki and her sister, Linda, fell out with one another four months ago. They are not speaking when Linda emails that she has lethal abdominal tumors, that her only hope of survival is a total bone marrow replacement. Linda claims Rikki is too old to donate, and explains there’s only a slight chance she is a good match anyway—but Rikki refuses to accept that. Despite the wounding between them, Linda’s email ignites a wild aspiration in her sister: she will become the perfect donor, the perfect match, with the healthiest, most vigorous cells possible. She rises with intent to heal herself, her sister, and their rootlines, the patterns formed in their family of origin that have quietly shaped their lives. Rikki walks through the science while confronting dogma that limits how mind can transform body. She builds herself into a stem cell factory using Muay Thai kickboxing and vegetarian nutrition. Working through childhood wounds and mental limits with meditation and yoga, she finds her own power, as well as ways to show up for Linda and walk with her from the edge of death to a new life. Together, the two sisters beat the lymphoma—and, as they rediscover the intimacy and love of their innocent childhood, heal the intertwined roots of their family pain.

Book The Monk from Brooklyn

Download or read book The Monk from Brooklyn written by Antonio Graceffo and published by Gom Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2004-07 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of Kung Fu and modern Chinese Buddhism, is the oldest and most mysterious Kung Fu school in the world. It is an exotic and mythical destination of daydreams to millions of people. In the history of the temple, very few foreigners have ever had a chance to study there. Foreigners have been allowed to study in many of the Shaolin schools, near the temple, which have taken the Shaolin name as a marketing ploy, but less than fifty foreigners have studied at the original Shaolin Temple. Antonio Graceffo was lucky enough to be one of the few, and this is the chronicle of his experience. Antonio has twenty-five years of experience with martial arts, so it is with a knowing eye that he observed the training at the temple. But it is his background that gives him a very unique perspective. An Italian-American from Brooklyn, New York, and a former investment banker, Antonio was educated in some of the best universities that Europe and Asia had to offer. His articles are informative, humorous, and irreverent. He doesn't pull any punches writing about the filthy conditions and the diminished mental capacities of people who spent a lifetime learning to kick, but never bothered to learn to read and write. The title says it all. Put a Chinese-speaking Italian-American, from Brooklyn in the holiest of Buddhist temples, and watch the racial harmony flow.

Download or read book Sticks and Stones and Other Shenanigans written by Mick Shore and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sticks and Stones and other Shenanigans is the inspiring story of martial arts instructor extraordinaire Mick Shore, born in Doncaster in 1968 of Irish and Anglo-Indian heritage. “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me” so the saying goes, but Mick Shore was to learn that names do indeed hurt. However, he never let anyone see him cry; instead, he used the hateful name calling to make him stronger. Raw truths from the son of an Irishman, former victim of bullying and accomplished all round martial artist in the world of martial arts. Did you know...? In the 18th Century, the faction fighters of Tipperary used to gather together in groups or “fighting factions” to do battle with each other over territory or land disputes. This fighting involved the use of bata or clubs and when the law prohibited the carrying of a club or gavel, the fighters extended these bata to the length of a walking cane to get around the new law. Often the bata had the end or knob filled with lead for greater striking power in combat and this later became known as a shillelagh. In these battles the men would sometimes be accompanied by their wives as backup. These women would put stones into handkerchiefs and using these like a slingshot would throw them at the enemy. As a result, they were referred to as stone throwers or stone chuckers. The men and fighting women of Tipperary were fierce and the faction fighting spread throughout the south of Ireland with the last being held in 1887 in Cappawhite near Cashel, Co Tipperary, only a few miles from where Mick’s family are from and where his father was born.
