Book excerpt: In the reactor technical assistance program, it has been shown that the fuel content of the ETR control rods can be increased by 75% to give a generated power increase (in a control rod) of 50% and a typical increase in excess reactivity of 0.55%, without exceeding heat transfer limitations. A metal fabrication facility was completed for developing and fabricating sample fuel plates for local research programs. Hydraulic tests on experimental thin-plate narrowchannel fuel elements showed flow distribution improved over that of conventional MTR fuel elements. In the search for stronger alloys to make possible elements having thinner plates, comparative strength tests were made on plates of 6061 and 1100 aluminum alloys (in the fully-annealed condition); results are reported. Oxidation rates for an aluminum-uranium sample exposed to water vapor have been shown to follow a linear rate law within close limits. A method has been developed for use of the RMF to determine effective cross sections in terms of neutron density, cadmium ratio, and characteristic neutron temperature. This method makes it possible to determine for a sample. by a reactivity measurement, parameters which can be used to express effective cross sections for the sample in other reactor spectra, provided their neutron temperature and 1/v cadmium ratio are known. Book excerpt: In reactor technical assistance, a linearization technique was developed which yields a good prediction of charge life for MTR after a core has operated for some 60 Mwd. A detailed comparison of relative statistical weights proportional to the square of neutron flux and experimental statistical weights, showed the two in good agreement, both for MTR and for ETR. An MTR startup accident calculation (void formation neglected) indicated that doubling the withdrawal rate for shim rods increases the calculated energy release in the power transient by only 3%. In an investigation of service life of MTR shim rods, examination of a Be-Cd rod that had logged 20,000 Mwd revealed that the Cd had changed to flakes; a fuel-Cd rod with 2545 Mwd of service showed no corrosion damage. RMF measurements of the buildup of U/sup 233/ in MTR-irradiated Th slugs, made as part of a continuing program, were analyzed and results are presented. A gamma-insensitive control system for RMF-type reactors has been proposed, based on a loop ihrough which a liquid circulates from the reactor core to an external detector where its neutron activation is measured. A stability study showed flow control requirements to be reasonable. The Engineering Test Reactor Critical Facility fuel loading was increased from a 49 element core to a 59 element core to give an excess reactivity of 11% in DELTA k/k. Statistical weights and thermal flux measurements were made throughout the core. A means of estimating variation in boron content in ETR fuel elements by comparing a standard fuel element with a dummy element and an element containing only fuel showed the average boron content per fuel element to be 0.65 grams more than the specified 1.6 grams. The equlvalent total curie value of MTR fuel elements and the curie content of several specific isotopes were worked out. MTRETR Development. Four experimental shim rod magnets have already operated successfully without failure for longer than the average life of existing MTR shim rod magnets. The lower original cost, the replaceable coil feature, and the negligible maintenance for the experimental magnet should drastically reduce the maintenance attention presently required in the MTR. Refinements were made on the calculations of MTR fuel charge and xenon override. Prediction of MTR charge life was made using ingrowth of Xe/sup 135/ after a power reduction. Book excerpt: A summary of the more significant results of the work in progress in the technical branches of the Materials Testing Reactor-- Engineering Test Reactor complex are presented. Measurements of horizontal and vertical statistical weights in the ETRC show that a calculated statistical weight proportional to the square of the neutron flux provides good correlation with the measured statistical weight in the vertical plane but only a rough estimate in the horizontal plane. An investigation into a proposed gamma-insensitive neutron detection system utilizing neutron activation of a chemical solution has shown that the system will provide stable operation for practical operating parameters in the control of a nuclear reactor. Calculations on the irradiation of thorium show that continuous irradiation is desirable for greatest production of U-233 for later separation. Measurements made with the crystal spectrometer and fast chopper include additional total and fission cross sections for U-233, transmission measurements on Np-237 and enriched Ir, total cross section of D/sub 2/O from 5.5 to 2,000 ev (complete), and studies of Be crystal thickness effects. Inelastic scattering data for steam, methane, and vanadium were taken at 90 deg for several incident neutron energies at 0.014 to 0.48 ev. A pulsed crystal oscillator was developed to increase accuracy of time-of-flight measurements. Preliminary nuclear chemistry results on Pu-239 indicate that the ratio of asymmetric to symmetric fission is much greater for fissions produced by 0.3 ev neutrons than for those produced by thermal neutrons. Effective cross section values obtained from observed yields from several irradiated Pu napkin rings were used to calculate the yield curves for high nvt Pu irradiations made in similar fluxes. The four MTR permanent-magnet BETA -ray spectrometers were calibrated to allow measurements accurate to 0.05%. Gamma-gamma directional correlation meaaurements for 3 in. by 3 in. Nal(Tl) crystals were made to determine the difference between the experimental and theoretical values caused by the finite angular resolution of the detectors. A method was developed that gives a good representation of local flux distributions in plate-type reactor fuel assemblies by use of expansions in half-range Legendre polynomials. Diffusion theory is an inadequate approximation for this calculation, and conventional expansion of the angular distribution in full range Legendre polynomials may require many terms.
