Book excerpt: If you've ever ventured seventy miles south of Nashville to the quaint farming town of Lynchburg, you already know that it is justifiably famous for two things: Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 and the legendary spread of Southern cooking at Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding House. The recipes in this collection combine two of Tennessee's most celebrated cultural treasures into a guide for home cooks eager to capture the spirit of Lynchburg in their own kitchens. Written by Miss Mary Bobo's own Lynne Tolley and food writer Mindy Merrell, this cookbook distills the essence of Lynchburg life into something tangible you can experience whenever you need it. Join Lynne, Jack Daniel's own great-grandniece, as she shares family secrets, legacies, and heirloom recipes. Get a taste of life in the old Bobo Hotel, and discover how you can treat your own guests with the same trademark hospitality Miss Mary extended at her boarding house. You'll get a crash course in Southern cooking along the way, with a primer on the ingredients and techniques found in any good ol' Lynchburg kitchen. From grits and ham hocks, to iron skillet seasoning and self-rising cornmeal, all the pillars of a country kitchen are covered. So push up your sleeves, pour yourself a tall glass of Lynchburg Lemonade, and get ready to whip up some Moore County favorites.

Book Mrs Jack

Download or read book Mrs Jack written by Louise Hall Tharp and published by Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. This book was released on 1965 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Upon her marriage, Isabella Stewart was given an etiquette book entitled A Lady's Guide to Perfect Gentility. Belle dutifully took the book to Boston - and broke all the rules in a most delightful fashion." "In this manner Belle Stewart of New York became Mrs. Jack Gardner of Boston and began a career that kept nineteenth-century Boston agog and made her a legend even in her lifetime. A Midwestern lady came East "to see Mrs. Jack Gardner and the Atlantic Ocean" - and was disappointed in neither. It was said that Mrs. Jack climbed out of a convenient window to elope with Jack, that she received her guests perched on the branches of a ceiling-high potted mimosa tree, that she kept lions in her Venetian palace basement." "Louise Hall Tharp lifts the veil from the legend of Mrs. Jack and reveals the face of a sensitive, complex woman who was not only a daring fashion-setter, a great American show-off and a charmer, but a woman of genuine aesthetic sensibility in an era when "culture" was a social duty; a coquette easily flirted with, easily hurt; a woman warm and maternal but eventually to be childless." "Though the society pages filled their columns with sly innuendo and misinformation about Mrs. Jack, and spitefully inclined Boston hostesses spurned her, her husband always stood solemnly beside her, she was always surrounded by an entourage of young proteges, and she enjoyed friendships with the leading men of her day - with Henry Adams and Henry James, John Singer Sargent and Whistler, Henry Lee Higginson and Charles Eliot Norton, F. Marion Crawford and the young Bernard Berenson."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller Named a Best Book of 2020 by the Australian Book Review, AV Club, Books-a-Million, Electric Literature, Esquire, the Financial Times, Good Housekeeping (UK), The Guardian, Kirkus Reviews, Literary Hub, the New Statesman, the New York Public Library, NPR, the Star Tribune, and TIME Marilynne Robinson, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Humanities Medal, returns to the world of Gilead with Jack, the latest novel in one of the great works of contemporary American fiction Marilynne Robinson’s mythical world of Gilead, Iowa—the setting of her novels Gilead, Home, and Lila, and now Jack—and its beloved characters have illuminated and interrogated the complexities of American history, the power of our emotions, and the wonders of a sacred world. Jack is Robinson’s fourth novel in this now-classic series. In it, Robinson tells the story of John Ames Boughton, the prodigal son of Gilead’s Presbyterian minister, and his romance with Della Miles, a high school teacher who is also the child of a preacher. Their deeply felt, tormented, star-crossed interracial romance resonates with all the paradoxes of American life, then and now. Robinson’s Gilead novels, which have won one Pulitzer Prize and two National Book Critics Circle Awards, are a vital contribution to contemporary American literature and a revelation of our national character and humanity.

Book excerpt: The magic and wonder of winter’s first snowfall is perfectly captured in Ezra Jack Keat’s Caldecott Medal-winning picture book. Young readers can enjoy this celebrated classic as a full-sized board book, perfect for read-alouds of all kinds and a great gift for the holiday season. In 1962, a little boy named Peter put on his snowsuit and stepped out of his house and into the hearts of millions of readers. Universal in its appeal, this story beautifully depicts a child's wonder at a new world, and the hope of capturing and keeping that wonder forever. This big, sturdy edition will bring even more young readers to the story of Peter and his adventures in the snow. Ezra Jack Keats was also the creator of such classics as Goggles, A Letter to Amy, Pet Show!, Peter’s Chair, and A Whistle for Willie. (This book is also available in Spanish, as Un dia de nieve.) Praise for The Snowy Day: “Keats made Peter’s world so inviting that it beckons us. Perhaps the busyness of daily life in the 21st century makes us appreciate Peter even more—a kid who has the luxury of a whole day to just be outside, surrounded by snow that’s begging to be enjoyed.” —The Atlantic "Ezra Jack Keats's classic The Snowy Day, winner of the 1963 Caldecott Medal, pays homage to the wonder and pure pleasure a child experiences when the world is blanketed in snow."—Publisher's Weekly
