Book Mrs Caldwell Speaks to Her Son

Download or read book Mrs Caldwell Speaks to Her Son written by Camilo José Cela and published by Ithaca, N.Y. : Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1968 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Well Mrs Caldwell is the English mother of Eliacim who has died a while ago (not clear but possibly in WW2 or at least between the world wars). She is writing a sort of diary of her thoughts as she ponders her relationship with her now grown son. The book has about 200 pages with about 200 short chapters, each with a descriptive heading. She is going mad and the basic suggestion (though not clear since this is definitely not a simple narrative story, but in my view) is because of her guilt in having had incestuous thoughts about him since he was a boy. Each chapter is basically a thought picture with little connectivity with the others as Caldwell brings to mind Eliacim’s possible loves, his career in the navy (he dies aboard ship and is buried at sea), objects that spark a memory, avoids but alludes to her inappropriate behaviours and so on. There is a possible thread of ideas associated with water, wood of coffins, sin, time and her own youth."--Goodreads

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a searching perceptive examination of the fifty years of Dr. Mitchell’s service as preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church ministry and a scholar in the church and university, how she was led into this dual profession, how she survived in it as a Black woman, how social movements and changes in the society impacted her life and ambitions, and most of all how God was always working in her life over more than eight decades, guiding, directing, sustaining her and enabling her to achieve His purposes for her life, thereby getting the glory out of her life for the good of her family, others, friends, and the church and society. She accepted her role as a divine instrument, and only God could have enabled her to adjust and readjust to the rapid changes taking place from one decade to another in the Civil Rights Movement, the Black Power Movement, the Women’s Rights Movement, the Black Womanist Movement.

Download or read book A Necklace of Bees written by Dannye Romine Powell and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a quirky poignance, Dannye Romine Powell’s third collection probes the nature of loss—loss that's actual and loss that's feared. In these poems, loss takes many guises. With its ferny breath, loss is sometimes the lover who waits in secret on the porch. Sometimes even loss recognizes the feeling of loss and "calls the cops / to say his best friend / went fishing and won't answer his phone." Often, the poet mourns a loss of innocence, as when she learns, after attending the funeral of a friend, that the dead woman's husband has a history of infidelity. There's also the loss of romantic love, as when the woman "pulls / toward shore, a shore she calls by a name / she swore she'd never breathe again."

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller Allison Brennan's two series collide in Shattered, a powerful, enthralling read about the craving for revenge and the desire for justice. Over a span of twenty years, four boys have been kidnapped from their bedrooms, suffocated, and buried nearby in a shallow grave. Serial killer or coincidence? That’s the question investigative reporter Maxine Revere sets out to answer when an old friend begs her to help exonerate his wife, who has been charged with their son’s recent murder. But Max can do little to help because the police and D.A. won’t talk to her—they think they have the right woman. Instead, Max turns her attention to three similar cold cases. If she can solve them, she might be able to help her friend. Justin Stanton was killed twenty years ago, and his father wants closure—so he is willing to help Max with her investigation on one condition: that she work with his former sister-in-law— Justin’s aunt, FBI Agent Lucy Kincaid. Trouble is, Max works alone, and she’s livid that her only access to the case files, lead detective and witnesses depends on her partnering with a federal agent on vacation. She wants the career-making story almost as much as the truth—but if she gets this wrong, she could lose everything. Haunted by Justin’s death for years, Lucy yearns to give her family—and herself—the closure they need. More important, she wants to catch a killer. Lucy finds Max’s theory on all three cases compelling—with Max's research added to Lucy’s training and experience, Lucy believes they can find the killer so justice can finally be served. But the very private Lucy doesn’t trust the reporter any more than Max trusts her. Max and Lucy must find a way to work together to untangle lies, misinformation, and evidence to develop a profile of the killer. But the biggest question is: why were these boys targeted? As they team up to find out what really happened the night Justin was killed, they make a shocking discovery: Justin’s killer is still out there ... stalking another victim ... and they already may be too late.
