Book Luom s Journey

Download or read book Luom s Journey written by M D Fenton and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Path of Past to Present View tells a story of migrations, betrayals, sacrifices and survival in Viet Nam. It is the story of Bay, the son of a Chinese refugee, who builds a life for himself and his family with his hard work and cunning, though at great costs. It is the story of Danh, whom fate would have join him, for better or worse, and it is the story of their family and their struggles. But most of all it is the story of their first surviving daughter, Luom, a child born under a curse, whose faith and determination keep her family whole, even when her family ignores her. As old ways of thinking clash with the new, and old superstitions and customs impose on the next generation, Luom's voice, loud and unmistakable, rings out with the strength of faith for truth and fairness. Readers will be astonished at this breathtaking account of life in a state of perpetual war. Through their deeds and words, Luom learns from her parents exactly what is necessary to survive, and how far a woman must go to see her family endure. The hardest lesson, though, is for Luom to learn how to remain true to herself. For in Viet Nam, the jungle doesn't forgive, and the people don't forget. Written in a stark, deliberate prose, A Path of Past to Present View brings the reader face to face with three generations, as they endure monsoons and fevers, fight the brutal Viet Cong, suffer the worst heartbreak imaginable and the summit of all possible joys. With echoes of One Hundred Years of Solitude and the Book of Genesis, both, it is truly an unforgettable journey, and a remarkable testament to the power of love.

Book The delays in administering the 2005 Single Payment Scheme in England

Download or read book The delays in administering the 2005 Single Payment Scheme in England written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-09-06 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EU Single Payment Scheme replaced 11 previous subsidies to farmers based on agricultural production with one payment for land management. The European Commission gave some discretion to Member States over how to implement the scheme, and the Rural Payments Agency, which is responsible for administering the scheme in England, opted for the dynamic hybrid model which incorporates elements of previous entitlement and new regionalised area payments based on a flat rate per hectare. The Agency and Defra encountered severe problems in the implementation of the scheme in England, and by the end of March 2006, it had paid farmers only 15 per cent of the £1,515 million due, compared with its target of 96 per cent. This caused significant hardship to farmers and taxpayers will have to pay extra implementation costs. Defra has had to secure an extra £300 million to meet the potential cost of disallowance of expenditure by the European Commission arising on the problems in administering the scheme. Following on from a NAO report on this topic (HCP 1631, session 2005-06; ISBN 9780102943399 published in October 2006, as well as a report from the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee (HCP 107-I, session 2006-07, ISBN 9780215033383) published in March 2007, this report by the Public Accounts Committee examines the impact of the payment delays on the farming sector, why implementation failed, the role of Defra and the changes being put in place to rectify the mistakes made. Lessons highlighted include: the Department made the scheme unnecessarily complex by choosing to adopt the most demanding implementation option; the Rural Payments Agency shed too many experienced staff at a key time; implementation of the project started before the scheme specification was finalised; and the IT system was introduced without adequate testing, a failure often seen with government IT projects.

Book Insurance Law Cases and Materials

Download or read book Insurance Law Cases and Materials written by John Lowry and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-07-19 with total page 1236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a complement to the authors' Insurance Law: Doctrines and Principles, following its general pattern but integrating the jurisprudence from other common law jurisdictions, particularly the USA, as a means of demonstrating how problems which have long confronted the English courts frequently receive different legislative/judicial responses elsewhere. Although the emphasis of the book lies with the case law spanning some two centuries, the authors introduce each section with a brief narrative designed to focus the reader's attention as he or she works through the cases. A critical approach is adopted and emphasis is given to major journal articles and to the current UK and EU reform agenda. Readership: undergraduates, external students taking the London LL.M Insurance Law course, CII candidates and those who lack access to a law library.

Book excerpt: “Do we have a name for the girl?” asked Oscar. “Yes, a girl who was reported missing last night – Ashadieeyah Khan, age twenty.” “Ashadieeyah means princess,” said Manjitt, “it's a Muslim name, but why are we here? It doesn't seem to be one of our cases.” The murder of a young girl on Wimbledon Common leads to police interference, political skulduggery and terrorist plots. A girl’s body is found – is she the girl her family thought she was? Her parents hear stories about her that they cannot believe, but they have no-one to turn to. The case is handed to the serious crime and murder squad, led by Chief Superintendent Charlie Smith, a policeman with few friends in high places. His lifestyle has led to jealousy and stories of corruption amongst the top brass at Scotland Yard. The team Charlie leads is made up of officers who could not find a home in other police departments – due to their attitude and background – but are fiercely loyal to their boss. In turn, they know he will support them when things get tough. As the case continues, it becomes apparent that someone wants to stop them discovering the truth – but why? The team encounter interference from and conflict with other police departments, who will seemingly stop at nothing to prevent them from finding out the truth. Political corruption at the highest levels, surrounding the Prime Minister and other Cabinet ministers, is uncovered – but who is involved? What has this got to do with the murder? And what is the truth? Charlie Smith won’t let anything stand in his way to find the truth – and the murderer... Why Was She Killed? is a gripping work of crime fiction.
