Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A postmodern Victorian novel about faith, knowledge and our inner needs. The late 1870s, the Kentish village of Downe. The villagers gather in church one rainy Sunday. Only Thomas Davies stays away. The eccentric loner, father of two and a grief-stricken widower, works as a gardener for the notorious naturalist, Charles Darwin. He shuns religion. But now Thomas needs answers. What should he believe in? And why should he continue to live? Why Peirene chose to publish this book: 'This is Peirene's most poetic book yet. A tale of God, grief and talking chickens. Like Dylan Thomas in Under Milk Wood, Carlson evokes the voices of an entire village, and, through them, the spirit of the age. This is no page-turner, but a story to be inhabited, to be savoured slowly.' Meike Ziervogel 'The translation is terrific and the author's grasp of England circa 1880 is utterly convincing.' Sally Vickers, Observer 'It's hard to believe this novel originated in another country. But it did, and the way Carlson shows us to ourselves should make us wonder.' Nicholas Lezard, Guardian 'Allow layers of meaning to emerge after you finish reading, and you may be rewarded.' Harriet Paterson, Tablet 'The collective consciousness in this novel is an amazing choir: Carlson makes the souls of Downe Parish sing.' Helsingin Sanomat 'Carlson writes beautifully, wisely and with effortless humour.' Suomen Kuvalehti LONGLISTED FOR THE INTERNATIONAL IMPAC DUBLIN LITERARY AWARD 2015 OBSERVER BEST HOLIDAY READS 2013

Book Why Does My Grandfather Charles Darwin Act So Strangely

Download or read book Why Does My Grandfather Charles Darwin Act So Strangely written by Les Landrum and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Why does my Grandfather, Charles Darwin, act so strangely?” asks Bernard Darwin. He notices that Baba, his grandfather, does strange things like make faces in the mirror, have pet earthworms, and daydream frequently. The cook and the gardener seem to find Mr. Darwin’s behavior worrisome—maybe he just needs something to keep himself busy. Bernard decides to find out why his grandfather acts so strangely. The story is fiction, but all the characters really lived and might have interacted as they do in the story (see annotated list of all characters at the end). It is a good introduction to the life of Charles Darwin for children of 8 or older but most adults, who may want to read the story with their children, will find out something they did not know about Darwin. You will learn about Darwin’s voyage around the world with Captain FitzRoy, the earthquake in Chile, the fossils in the Andes and Patagonia, and the eye-opening experience of visiting the Galapagos Islands that led Darwin to formulate his ideas about biological evolution. He explains to his grandson Natural Selection, the driving force of evolution, the Economy of Nature, the result of the fierce competition between organisms that are constantly under the pressure of natural selection, and why it is that he makes faces in the mirror. And they perform an experiment together on earthworms that really happened, using a piano played by Bernard’s grandmother.

Book Charles Darwin s The Origin of Species

Download or read book Charles Darwin s The Origin of Species written by David Amigoni and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume marks a new approach to a seminal work of the modern scientific imagination: Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species (1859). Darwin's central theory of natural selection neither originated nor could be contained, with the parameters of the natural sciences, but continues to shape and challenge our most basic assumptions about human social and political life. Several new readings, crossing the fields of history, literature, sociology, anthropology and history of science, demonstrate the complex position of the text within cultural debates past and present. Contributors examine the reception and rhetoric of the Origin and its influence on systems of classification, the nineteenth-century women's movement, literary culture (criticism and practice) and Hinduism in India. At the same time, a re-reading of Darwin and Malthus offers a constructive critique of our attempts to map the hybrid origins and influences of the text. This volume will be the ideal companion to Darwin's work for all students of literature, social and cultural history and history of science.

Book excerpt: The forgotten garden that inspired Charles Darwin becomes the modern-day setting for an exploration of memory, family, and the legacy of genius. Darwin's childhood garden at The Mount in Shrewsbury was the site of some of the great scientist's earliest experiments. It was where, under the tutelage of his green-fingered mother and sisters, and the house's knowledgeable gardeners, he first examined the reproductive life of flowers, collected birds' eggs, and began to note down the ideas that would lead to his groundbreaking theory of evolution. In The Ghost in the Garden, Jude Piesse uncovers the lost histories that inspired Darwin's work and how his legacy, and the legacies of those around him, live on today.

Book Darwin s Most Wonderful Plants

Download or read book Darwin s Most Wonderful Plants written by Ken Thompson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people, the story of Charles Darwin goes like this: he ventured to the Galapagos Islands on the Beagle, was inspired by the biodiversity of the birds he saw there, and immediately returned home to write his theory of evolution. But this simplified narrative is inaccurate and lacking: it leaves out a major part of Darwin’s legacy. He published On the Origin of Species nearly thirty years after his voyages. And much of his life was spent experimenting with and observing plants. Darwin was a brilliant and revolutionary botanist whose observations and theories were far ahead of his time. With Darwin’s Most Wonderful Plants, biologist and gardening expert Ken Thompson restores this important aspect of Darwin’s biography while also delighting in the botanical world that captivated the famous scientist. Thompson traces how well Darwin’s discoveries have held up, revealing that many are remarkably long-lasting. Some findings are only now being confirmed and extended by high-tech modern research, while some have been corrected through recent analysis. We learn from Thompson how Darwin used plants to shape his most famous theory and then later how he used that theory to further push the boundaries of botanical knowledge. We also get to look over Darwin’s shoulder as he labors, learning more about his approach to research and his astonishing capacity for hard work. Darwin’s genius was to see the wonder and the significance in the ordinary and mundane, in the things that most people wouldn’t look at twice. Both Thompson and Darwin share a love for our most wonderful plants and the remarkable secrets they can unlock. This book will instill that same joy in casual gardeners and botany aficionados alike.

Book Darwin s Backyard How Small Experiments Led to a Big Theory

Download or read book Darwin s Backyard How Small Experiments Led to a Big Theory written by James T. Costa and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If you’ve ever fantasized walking and conversing with the great scientist on the subjects that consumed him, and now wish to add the fullness of reality, read this book.” —Edward O. Wilson, author of Half-Earth: Our Planet’s Fight for Life James T. Costa takes readers on a journey from Darwin’s childhood through his voyage on the HMS Beagle, where his ideas on evolution began, and on to Down House, his bustling home of forty years. Using his garden and greenhouse, the surrounding meadows and woodlands, and even the cellar and hallways of his home-turned-field-station, Darwin tested ideas of his landmark theory of evolution through an astonishing array of experiments without using specialized equipment. From those results, he plumbed the laws of nature and drew evidence for the revolutionary arguments of On the Origin of Species and other watershed works. This unique perspective introduces us to an enthusiastic correspondent, collaborator, and, especially, an incorrigible observer and experimenter. And it includes eighteen experiments for home, school, or garden. Finalist for the 2018 AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prizes for Excellence in Science Books.

Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 2 1837 1843 written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the complete edition of The Correspondence of Charles Darwin. For the first time full authoritative texts of Darwin's letters are available, edited according to modern textual editorial principles and practice. The letters in this volume were written during the seven years following Darwin's return to England from the Beagle voyage. It was a period of extraordinary activity and productivity in which he became recognised as a naturalist of outstanding ability, as an author and editor, and as a professional man with official responsibilities in several scientific organisations. During these years he published two books and fifteen papers and also organised and superintended the publication of the Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle, for which he described the locations of the fossils and the habitats and behaviour of the living species he had collected. Busy as he was with scientific activities, Darwin found time to re-establish family ties and friendships, and to make new friends among the naturalists with whom his work brought him into close contact. In November 1838, two years after his return Darwin became engaged to his cousin, Emma Wedgwood, whom he subsequently married.
