Book Mr Campion s Falcon

Download or read book Mr Campion s Falcon written by Youngman Carter and published by Felony & Mayhem. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew James Matthew dies of natural causes whilst staying at the upmarket Drover's Arms in the Cotswolds. Max Newgate, the pompous manager of the inn is found dead miles away in a Suffolk river near an archaeological dig. The star geologist of Omega Oils, the brilliant but eccentric Francis Makepeace, could be connected to both, but he has disappeared and seems determined not to be found. L.C. Corkran, whose retirement from Her Majesty's security service 'has been greatly exaggerated' now consults for the multi-national Omega Oils and turns to his old friend Albert Campion (who has always behaved 'like a civilised non-entity' but you wouldn't play poker with him) for help. A carnival of delightful, and not so delightful, characters become involved in the hunt for the missing geologist: the cool-headed, independent Miss Anthea Peregrine; the love-struck schoolboy Robert Oncer Smith; the rather dubious antique-dealer Morris Jay; known thug and small-time villain Ginger Scott, Appleyard, a boorish Suffolk policeman; and the grotesque, repellent and very dangerous Claude Porteous. But why is Makepeace, a brilliant and successful man, on the run? Is it because of a failed Omega Oil exploration project in the new African republic of Serendi, or connected to the archaeological excavation of a 4th Century Roman ship? Could the missing Francis Makepeace and the dead Matthew James Matthew somehow be one and the same person? It takes all Campion's guile and charm to get to the bottom of the mystery and ensure that the new, youthful allies he recruits emerge unscathed.

The Danish Ambassador has requested Albert Campion’s help on ‘a delicate family matter’. He’s very concerned about his eighteen-year-old daughter, who has formed an attachment to a most unsuitable young man. Recruiting his unemployed actor son, Rupert, to keep an eye on Frank Tate, the young man in question, Mr Campion notes some decidedly odd behaviour on the part of the up-and-coming photographer. Before he can act on the matter, however, both the Ambassador’s daughter and her beau disappear without trace. Then a body is discovered in a lagoon. With appearances from all of Margery Allingham’s regular characters, from Campion’s former manservant Lugg, to his wife Lady Amanda Fitton and others, this witty and elegant mystery is sure to delight Allingham’s many fans. The dialogue is sharp and witty, the observation keen, and the climax is thrilling and eerily atmospheric.

Book Shakespearean Allusion in Crime Fiction

Download or read book Shakespearean Allusion in Crime Fiction written by Lisa Hopkins and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores why crime fiction so often alludes to Shakespeare. It ranges widely over a variety of authors including classic golden age crime writers such as the four ‘queens of crime’ (Allingham, Christie, Marsh, Sayers), Nicholas Blake and Edmund Crispin, as well as more recent authors such as Reginald Hill, Kate Atkinson and Val McDermid. It also looks at the fondness for Shakespearean allusion in a number of television crime series, most notably Midsomer Murders, Inspector Morse and Lewis, and considers the special sub-genre of detective stories in which a lost Shakespeare play is found. It shows how Shakespeare facilitates discussions about what constitutes justice, what authorises the detective to track down the villain, who owns the countryside, national and social identities, and the question of how we measure cultural value.

Book Overbooked

  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2013-04-16
  • ISBN : 1439167508
  • Pages : 513 pages

Download or read book Overbooked written by Elizabeth Becker and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism, fast becoming the largest global business, employs one out of twelve persons and produces $6.5 trillion of the world’s economy. In a groundbreaking book, Elizabeth Becker uncovers how what was once a hobby has become a colossal enterprise with profound impact on countries, the environment, and cultural heritage. This invisible industry exploded at the end of the Cold War. In 2012 the number of tourists traveling the world reached one billion. Now everything can be packaged as a tour: with the high cost of medical care in the U.S., Americans are booking a vacation and an operation in countries like Turkey for a fraction of the cost at home. Becker travels the world to take the measure of the business: France invented the travel business and is still its leader; Venice is expiring of over-tourism. In Cambodia, tourists crawl over the temples of Angkor, jeopardizing precious cultural sites. Costa Rica rejected raising cattle for American fast-food restaurants to protect their wilderness for the more lucrative field of eco-tourism. Dubai has transformed a patch of desert in the Arabian Gulf into a mammoth shopping mall. Africa’s safaris are thriving, even as its wildlife is threatened by foreign poachers. Large cruise ships are spoiling the oceans and ruining city ports as their American-based companies reap handsome profits through tax loopholes. China, the giant, is at last inviting tourists and sending its own out in droves. The United States, which invented some of the best of tourism, has lost its edge due to political battles. Becker reveals travel as product. Seeing the tourism industry from the inside out, through her eyes and ears, we experience a dizzying range of travel options though very few quiet getaways. Her investigation is a first examination of one of the largest and potentially most destructive enterprises in the world.
