Book Move for a Healthy Mind a Program of Peer led Physical Activity for Adolescents with Depression and Anxiety

Download or read book Move for a Healthy Mind a Program of Peer led Physical Activity for Adolescents with Depression and Anxiety written by Emily Ann Edwards and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following discusses adolescent depression and anxiety and the utilization of physical activity as an intervention or coping mechanism. Adolescents have been experiencing increased rates of anxiety or depression diagnoses over the past roughly two decades. Adolescence is, physiologically, a formative period in the developmental stage from childhood to adulthood. Current barriers to achieving optimal mental health among the adolescent population include the stigmatization of mental health issues, lack of education, socioeconomic status and healthcare access. Further, physical activity has been studied and identified to be an effective treatment for individuals experiencing depression and anxiety. In an effort to treat the adolescent population experiencing mental health issues, the following discusses the proposal of utilizing a peer-led exercise workshop to combat depression and anxiety. Move for a Healthy Mind is a program that combines physical exercise and education for adolescents and guardians to target adolescent depression and anxiety with a goal of preventing or improving symptoms of depression and anxiety. The program is modeled based on a number of successful existing programs and studies with a goal to improve or prevent symptoms of depression and anxiety among adolescent-aged students. The program will deploy trained volunteers known as Mental Health Ambassadors, ages 17-18, to participating middle schools and high schools to conduct a two-part peer-to-peer workshop including classroom discussion and physical exercise. The program intends to tackle mental health stigma, improve physical health, and inform adolescents and parents of available mental health resources.

This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government recognises that many lifestyle-driven health problems are at alarming levels: obesity; high rates of sexually transmitted infections; a relatively large population of drug users; rising levels of harm from alcohol; 80,000 deaths a year from smoking; poor mental health; health inequalities between rich and poor. This white paper outlines the Government's proposals to protect the population from serious health threats; help people live longer, healthier and more fulfilling lives; and improve the health of the poorest. It aims to empower individuals to make healthy choices and give communities and local government the freedom, responsibility and funding to innovate and develop ways of improving public health in their area. The paper responds to Sir Michael Marmot's strategic review of health inequalities in England post 2010 - "Fair society, healthy lives" (available at http://www.marmotreview.org/AssetLibrary/pdfs/Reports/FairSocietyHealthyLives.pdf) and adopts its life course framework for tackling the wider social determinants of health. A new dedicated public health service - Public Health England - will be created to ensure excellence, expertise and responsiveness, particularly on health protection where a national response is vital. The paper gives a timetable showing how the proposals will be implemented and an annex sets out a vision of the role of the Director of Public Health. The Department is also publishing a fuller story on the health of England in "Our health and wellbeing today" (http://www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/@dh/@en/@ps/documents/digitalasset/dh_122238.pdf), detailing the challenges and opportunities, and in 2011 will issue documents on major public health issues.

Book An Exploration of the Contexts of Physical Activity that Impact Mental Health and Wellbeing in Adolescents

Download or read book An Exploration of the Contexts of Physical Activity that Impact Mental Health and Wellbeing in Adolescents written by John Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Physical activity is well recognised as a key risk factor for the management and prevention of mental ill-health. Meta-analytic evidence has shown the leisure-time life domain had the strongest associations with positive mental health. Sport, a sub-domain, of leisure time physical activity has also shown positive associations with increased mental health. Aim: Explore contexts of physical activity with the strongest associations with mental wellbeing in Irish adolescents. Method: A multi-method series of five interlinking studies including a national questionnaire, a non-randomised controlled trial and two rounds of focus group interviews. Results: Study one found a minority of adolescents met WHO's physical activity guidelines. Frequency of activity were found to decline with age. Frequency of activity was positively correlated with wellbeing and negatively correlated with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Males had higher levels of wellbeing and lower levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms across all sub-groups. Study two found that participating in games twice a week led to significant decreases in symptoms of anxiety and depression. Mental wellbeing significantly increased in those who participated two and three times a week. Increases in mental wellbeing were similar in effect size to increases in self-efficacy. Studies three and four identified five main themes that contribute to and support positive mental wellbeing through physical activity and sport: improvements and achievements; meaningful experiences; setbacks and losses leading to higher resilience; facilitating and maintaining social connections; and opportunities for mindfulness and distraction. Adolescents reporting elevated symptoms of depression increased from 39% to 46% with almost 3 in 5 females reporting symptoms of depression ranging from mild to extreme. There was an 8% reduction in the amount of adolescents who participated in 3 or more sports. No changes in physical activity levels were found overall, despite changes within subgroups and patterns of physical activity. Conclusion: Higher frequencies of physical activity and participation in sports are associated with lower symptoms of anxiety and depression, and higher levels of mental wellbeing. Improvements and achievements from physical activities, meaningful experiences and the psychological skills developed through playing sports appear to be the main contributors to higher levels of wellbeing and may offer 'protective effects' against symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Download or read book The Promise of Adolescence written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Book Exercise your way to health Depression

Download or read book Exercise your way to health Depression written by Debbie Lawrence and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression is hugely common in our society. The Mental Health Foundation believes that 1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year, with mixed anxiety and depression being the most common. It affects 1 in 5 older people living in the community and 2 in 5 in care homes (MHF). This means that a staggering amount of people are having to deal with its devastating fallout at home, work and in retirement each year. However, evidence shows that a supervised programme of exercise can be as effective as antidepressants in treating mild or moderate depression (Mental Health Foundation / MIND). The link between exercise and mental wellbeing is a key part of recovery, and this user-friendly book is there to show the way. As with all the titles in the Exercise Your Way to Health series, the book contains a series of well-illustrated exercises specifically designed to combat depression and its physical side effects. Taking into account the prevalence of depression and the well-documented link between exercise and mental health, this is a timely publication, and one that will help many people regain control of their lives.

Book A Qualitative Investigation of the Peer Mentor Experience in a Physical Activity Intervention for Mental Health

Download or read book A Qualitative Investigation of the Peer Mentor Experience in a Physical Activity Intervention for Mental Health written by Taylor R. Leenstra and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interventions that utilize peer mentors to aid in altering the physical activity behaviors and attitudes of individuals have grown in popularity (Mellanby, Rees, & Tripp, 2000). While the mentees' experiences in such programs have been studied extensively, there is little research that explores the experiences of the mentors. The Western Wellcat program is a peer-led physical activity intervention designed to improve the mental and physical well-being of students with clinical depression and anxiety (Keeler, 2015). In the Western Wellcat program peer mentors serve as supportive, reliable, and knowledgeable exercise partners for their peers (Keeler, 2015). The purpose of this study was to qualitatively investigate the experiences of peer mentors in the Western Wellcat program. Participants included eight former Western Wellcat peer mentors, who participated in the program in 2015 and 2016. Using semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions, the researcher explored the peer mentors' motivations to sign up, their expectations for the program, the ways in which the program influenced them, and solicited suggestions they had for program improvement. Inductive coding revealed multiple themes in each area of exploration. The 13 themes that emerged from the peer mentors' experiences were all related to their personal growth, interpersonal awareness, and professional development. Regarding the peer mentors' overall experiences, deductive analysis was also performed based on the three basic human psychological needs of the self-determination theory: autonomy, competence, and relatedness (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Based on the emerged themes, the self-determination theory adequately explained the peer mentors' experiences in the Western Wellcat program.

Book What Is the Evidence on the Role of the Arts in Improving Health and Well Being

Download or read book What Is the Evidence on the Role of the Arts in Improving Health and Well Being written by Daisy Fancourt and published by . This book was released on 2019-06 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, there has been a major increase in research into the effects of the arts on health and well-being, alongside developments in practice and policy activities in different countries across the WHO European Region and further afield. This report synthesizes the global evidence on the role of the arts in improving health and well-being, with a specific focus on the WHO European Region. Results from over 3000 studies identified a major role for the arts in the prevention of ill health, promotion of health, and management and treatment of illness across the lifespan. The reviewed evidence included study designs such as uncontrolled pilot studies, case studies, small-scale cross-sectional surveys, nationally representative longitudinal cohort studies, community-wide ethnographies and randomized controlled trials from diverse disciplines. The beneficial impact of the arts could be furthered through acknowledging and acting on the growing evidence base; promoting arts engagement at the individual, local and national levels; and supporting cross-sectoral collaboration.

Book Project MENTOR

Download or read book Project MENTOR written by Marissa Errickson Carraway and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overweight adolescents are at increased risk for peer victimization and avoidance of physical activity, thus perpetuating overweight status and peer victimization. Avenues of intervention include (1) reducing avoidance through increased perceived competence for physical activity and (2) bolstering protective factors including familial support and problem-focused coping to minimize the negative impact of victimization. The purpose of the current pilot study was to assess an intervention designed to improve perceived competence for activity through mentor-led exercise and improve perceived social support and problem-focused coping skills through group-based skills training. The present pilot study, a randomized clinical trial with waitlist control, examined the impact of MENTOR alone versus MENTOR+CBT on physical and psychological outcomes at post treatment (12 weeks) and 4-month follow-up (28 weeks). Twenty-four overweight Caucasian and African American adolescents were assigned either to MENTOR (n = 11) or MENTOR+CBT (n = 13). All participants completed the Physical Appearance Related Teasing Scale, the Children and Youth Physical Self-Perception Profile, and accelerometry. The MENTOR+CBT group also completed the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Repeated measures Analysis of Variance revealed a statistically significant change in perceived athletic competence by time, F(2, 44) = 4.32, p = .019, [eta][subscript]p2 = .164. However, this did not result in significant changes in physical activity across time, F(2, 46) = 1.846, p = .169, [eta][subscript]p2 = .074. There were no statistically significant changes in social anxiety or perceived social support nor were there differences in outcomes by group. While findings did not support the hypothesis that mentor-led exercise plus group-based skills training would improve social anxiety and social support as well as increase physical activity beyond the exercise program alone, differences in outcomes by ethnicity and a floor effect due to low baseline scores on psychosocial measures limit interpretation of these findings. Additional randomized clinical trials which include adolescents experiencing weight-related teasing and control for ethnicity are needed to compare both levels of treatment with control and more accurately determine the value of this intervention.
