Irvin Rock was a global perceptual theorist in the grand tradition of von Helmoltz, Wertheimer, and Gibson. This posthumous volume, the culmination of a long and distinguished career, brings together an original essay by the author together with a careful selection of previously published articles (most by Rock) on the theory that perception is an indirect process in which visual experience is derived by inference, rather than being directly and independently determined by retinal stimulation. Rock's reasons for holding that perception is indirect were mainly empirical. Unlike many theorists, he paid close attention to a broad range of experimental evidence in evaluating theoretical claims. His approach, in which theory and experiment go hand in hand, is well represented in this book. In the first chapter, which is new, Rock lays out the theoretical issues underlying indirect perception. The remaining twenty-two chapters present detailed evidence in support of the indirect view. They are divided into sections covering indirect perception, organization, shape, motion, illusions, lightness, and final considerations. Each section is introduced by the author. Book excerpt: With the increase in the amount and dimensionality of scientific data collected, new approaches to the design of displays of such data have become essential. The designers of visual and auditory displays of scientific data seek to harness perceptual processes for data exploration. The general aim is to provide ways for raw data, and the statistical and mathematical structures they comprise, to "speak for themselves" and, thereby, enable scientists to conduct exploratory, in addition to confirmatory analyses of their data. The present primary approach via visualization depends mainly on coding data as positions of visually distinguishable elements in a two- or three- dimen sional euclidean space, e.g., as discrete points comprising clusters in scatter-plot displays and as patches comprising the hills and valleys of statistical surfaces. These displays are immensely effective because the data are in a form that evokes natural perceptual processing of the data into impressions of the presence and spatial disposition of apparent materials, objects, and structures in the viewers apparent physical environment. The problem with this mode of display, however, is that its perceptual potency is largeiy exhausted at dimension three, while we increasingly face the need to explore data of much greater dimensionality. The challenge posed for visualization researchers is to develop new modes of display that can push the dimensionality of data displays higher while retaining the kind of perceptual potency needed for data exploration.

Selbst-Avatare werden zum Beispiel in den Bereichen Visualisierung und Simulation, aber auch in klinischen Anwendungen oder für Unterhaltungszwecke eingesetzt. Deshalb ist es wichtig neue Erkenntnisse über die Wahrnehmung des eigenen Körpers, des Selbst-Avatars und der räumlichen Wahrnehmung des Benutzers zu gewinnen, sowie den Einfluss des Selbst-Avatars auf die räumliche Wahrnehmung in der virtuellen Welt zu untersuchen. Mit Hilfe von moderner VR-Technologie habe ich untersucht wie Veränderungen des Selbst-Avatars die Wahrnehmung des eigenen Körpers und des Raumes verändern. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Selbst-Avatare nicht genau die gleichen Dimensionen wie der Körper des Benutzers haben müssen, damit sich der Benutzer mit seinem Selbst-Avatar identifizieren kann.
