Book Ancient Quests of the Double Peaked Mountain

Download or read book Ancient Quests of the Double Peaked Mountain written by Clay Sherrod and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only traces of ancient civilizations and cultures remain from the prehistoric record, and only through small pieces - stories, images and fragments - do we feel the lives of the Native Americans who called this land 'Home' for thousands of years, and then forced away from that homeland. As cultures merged, efforts continued by solitary ethnic populations to maintain their ancient ways. But scattered, diluted and confused many of the ancient sacred ways became legend and myth. The story seemingly ends with most of these people and their heritage either driven away or finally scattered into mixed cultures. At some time around 1898, the last time any of these people returned to a mysterious annual quest - a link to their past - was the time at which they would never return. This is a tale of a "double-peaked mountain", a vision quest and the Shaman who perhaps ritualistically preserved markers of heritage important to those people who passed through the river valleys of Arkansas.

Book The Four Vision Quests of Jesus

Download or read book The Four Vision Quests of Jesus written by Steven Charleston and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique look at Christian biblical interpretation and theology from the perspective of Native American tradition. This book focuses on four specific experiences of Jesus as portrayed in the synoptic gospels. It examines each story as a “vision quest,” a universal spiritual phenomenon, but one of particular importance within North American indigenous communities. Jesus’ experience in the wilderness is the first quest. It speaks to a foundational Native American value: the need to enter into the “we” rather than the “I.” The Transfiguration is the second quest, describing the Native theology of transcendent spirituality that impacts reality and shapes mission. Gethsemane is the third quest. It embodies the Native tradition of the holy men or women, who find their freedom through discipline and concerns for justice, compassion, and human dignity. Golgotha is the final quest. It represents the Native sacrament of sacrifice (e.g., the Sun Dance). The chapter on Golgotha is a discussion of kinship, balance, and harmony: all primary to Native tradition and integral to Christian thought.

The world tells us that we should pursue our self-interest: career wins, high status, nice things. These are the goals of our first mountain. But at some point in our lives we might find that we're not interested in what other people tell us to want. We want the things that are truly worth wanting. This is the second mountain. What does it mean to look beyond yourself and find a moral cause? To forget about independence and discover dependence - to be utterly enmeshed in a web of warm relationships? What does it mean to value intimacy, devotion, responsibility and commitment above individual freedom? In The Second Mountain David Brooks explores the meaning and possibilities that scaling a second mountain offer us and the four commitments that most commonly move us there: family, vocation, philosophy and community. Inspiring, personal and full of joy, this book will help you discover why you were really put on this earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the place names, geographical knowledge, and cultural associations of the Kiowa from the earliest recorded sources to the present, Kiowa Ethnogeography is the most in-depth study of its kind in the realm of Plains Indian tribal analysis. Linking geography to political and social changes, William Meadows applies a chronological approach that demonstrates a cultural evolution within the Kiowa community. Preserved in both linguistic and cartographic forms, the concepts of place, homeland, intertribal sharing of land, religious practice, and other aspects of Kiowa life are clarified in detail. Native religious relationships to land (termed "geosacred" by the author) are carefully documented as well. Meadows also provides analysis of the only known extant Kiowa map of Black Goose, its unique pictographic place labels, and its relationship to reservation-era land policies. Additional coverage of rivers, lakes, and military forts makes this a remarkably comprehensive and illuminating guide.
