Book excerpt: From the beautiful green mountains of Tumbling Creek, Virginia to the coalmines of West Virginia, came a man, strong, as if carved from granite, with a wife and ten children. They survived the everpresent stench of coal dust; the loud rumble of freight trains loaded with fresh dug coal that spewed billowing black smoke throughout the coal camps night and day. Some will say they lived a gypsy life, but those who lived through the Great Depression will remember the struggles that had to be made in order to survive to keep food on the table and clothes on their backs. Later Tom moved his family several times in order to make a living. These included Cedar Bluff, Tumbling Creek, and then on to Meadowview Farm where the family settled down to farming. Their last move was to Indiana where Tom retired to live among his children who had moved there earlier. You will get to know each child as they grow into adults; laugh at the antics of a large and boistrous family, and cry when tragedy strikes. This is the continuing story of Tom and Dolly and the sequel to Mountain Blossoms.

Book Asheville and Western North Carolina in World War II

Download or read book Asheville and Western North Carolina in World War II written by Reid Chapman and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War II served as a rallying call in Asheville and Western North Carolina, putting the citizens back to work. Asheville's two strongest economic sectors, tourism and medicine; its beautiful isolation; and advanced hospitals served the nation's needs during the Second World War. The United States secreted German and Japanese businessmen, federal agencies, and valuable art in these mountains, and recuperating soldiers found solace in the camps and inns. Meanwhile our citizens-black and white men, women, and children-offered themselves up for service. Images of America: Asheville and Western North Carolina in World War II tells their stories, from Pearl Harbor's bombing to the study of the long-term effects of radiation on the Japanese, from the far Pacific to stateside support groups and local sacrifices.

Book Memories of Mount Qilai

Download or read book Memories of Mount Qilai written by Yang Mu and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hualien, on the Pacific coast of eastern Taiwan, and its mountains, especially Mount Qilai, were deeply inspirational for the young poet Yang Mu. A place of immense natural beauty and cultural heterogeneity, the city was also a site of extensive social, political, and cultural change in the twentieth century, from the Japanese occupation and the American bombings of World War II to the Chinese civil war, the White Terror, and the Cold War. Taken as a whole, these evocative and allusive autobiographical essays provide a personal response to history as Taiwan transitioned from a Japanese colony to the Republic of China. Yang Mu recounts his childhood experiences under the Japanese, life in the mountains in proximity to indigenous people as his family took refuge from the American bombings, his initial encounters and cultural conflicts with Nationalist soldiers recently arrived from mainland China, the subsequent activities of the Nationalist government to consolidate power, and the island's burgeoning new manufacturing society. Nevertheless, throughout those early years, Yang Mu remained anchored by a sense of place on Taiwan's eastern coast and amid its coastal mountains, over which stands Mount Qilai like a guardian spirit. This was the formative milieu of the young poet. Yang Mu seized on verse to develop a distinct persona and draw meaning from the currents of change reshuffling his world. These eloquent essays create an exciting, subjective realm meant to transcend the personal and historical limitations of the individual and the end of culture, "plundered and polluted by politics and industry long ago."

Book The Glittering Mountains of Canada

Download or read book The Glittering Mountains of Canada written by James Monroe Thorington and published by Rocky Mountain Books Ltd. This book was released on 2012 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This then is a book of mountaineering, not presenting the Canadian Rockies in their entirety -- no single volume will ever do that -- but including many of the finest things. It is also a book of mountain travel, under conditions such as perhaps the European traveller experienced in the Alps during the Eighteenth Century. Finally, it is a book of mountain history; for here is Geography in the making, and with a tradition behind it -- a story that has never been properly gathered together, and whose details, in part at least, are gone forever." -- from the Preface by J. Monroe Thorington Completely re-edited, re-designed and containing with an impressive collection of archival photos and maps, The Glittering Mountains of Canada is a must-read for anyone interested in mountain literature. The book's position in the pantheon of outdoor writing as a "classic" is only further enhanced and supported by the passionate Foreword by well-known mountain historian and environmental writer Robert William Sandford, who urges the contemporary reader to embrace Thorington's belief in the importance of landscape and the poetry of place. This is a book that deserves to be read and appreciated alongside the work of Wallace Stegner, Henry David Thoreau and Sid Marty.
