Book A review of management actions to recover mountain caribou in British Columbia

Download or read book A review of management actions to recover mountain caribou in British Columbia written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The population of mountain caribou is declining in British Columbia (BC). It has been suggested that this decline is proximally due to high mortality linked to predation and ultimately due to fragmentation, alteration and loss of suitable habitat over the long-term. In response, the government of BC convened a Science Team (ST) in 2005 to provide government with technical advice and information on how to recover mountain caribou ... Advice and information provided by the ST (Mountain Caribou Science Team 2006), along with input provided during consultations with over 80 stakeholder groups, lead to the BC government announcement of the Mountain Caribou Recovery Implementation Plan (MCRIP) (Figure 1), in October 2007. This Plan committed government to several management actions with the goal to halt the decline of mountain caribou within seven years and recover the population to pre-1995 levels (2500 animals) within 20 years."--Introd.

Book excerpt: "If the caribou die, then we die." These few words speak eloquently to the significanceof caribou for northern peoples. They were spoken not by a wise old chief, but by a 13-year-old Dene youth in 2007 during a hearing regarding uranium exploration on the caribou wintering grounds. Right now there is urgent, widespread concern about the future of the most centralof species: caribou. Caribou and the North brings both the facts and the feelingsof the current situation to a North American readership. The writers look at why we need to conserve the caribou, the threats that have faced caribou in the past, present, and future, and the actions that we can take. Also included is an appendixwith up-to-date information on the range, movements, habitats, numbers, population trends, and key threats to caribou in North America.

Book excerpt: "Recovery plans are a comprehensive compilation of goals, objectives, strategies and actions, both short- and long-term, required to maintain or restore the Threatened or Endangered species. These plans are provided by the recovery team as advice to the Minister responsible for fish and wildlife management (the Minister) and to all Albertans. ... This recovery plan identifies effective and feasible strategies and actions necessary to achieve woodland caribou recovery and removal from the list of provincially threatened species. The recovery plan goals are linked to the rationale for listing the species in Alberta, and focus on: 1) achieving self-sustaining woodland caribou herds; 2) maintaining the distribution of caribou in Alberta; and 3) ensuring habitat requirements are met for woodland caribou over the long-term throughout caribou ranges in the province."--Document.
