Book excerpt: Amazing stories about the artifacts transcend from generation to generation where the Tingguians viewed that Kaboniyan, the benevolent spirit or the creator or God, had rewarded industrious farmers and hunters whom he appreciated with talking jars and agates hanging in branches of plants near the cave where he lived. Cabildo confirmed the story about the talking jar. He is the grandson of Magsawi, the hunter who owned the famous talking jar. He was from Patok, Peñarrubia, Abra. He claimed that Magsawi had a hard time catching the eluding talking jar, but an unknown voice suggested to Magsawi how to catch the jumping, running, and talking jar. Magsawi had to kill a pig without young and offer the blood to the spirit. After Magsawi complied, he was able to catch the jar. The story spread and was extensively published. Tingguian elders were happy talking about the generosity and support of Kaboniyan to the Tingguians. There are other remarkable stories cited in the folktales of the Tingguians. One of them was when Kaboniyan had turned the water that dropped from the bodies of the ladies taking a bath in a river into agates a long, long time ago. The Tingguians postulate that the jars or the beads were either from Kaboniyan or from their ancestors. Whatever the case may be, the stories are mysterious and enchanting!

Book excerpt: Dominant historical narratives among cultures with long and enduring colonial experiences often ignore Indigenous histories. This erasure is a response to the colonial experiences. With diverse cultures like those in the Philippines, dominant groups may become assimilationists themselves. Collaborative archaeology is an important tool in correcting the historical record. In the northern Philippines, archaeological investigations in Ifugao have established more recent origins of the Cordillera Rice Terraces, which were once understood to be at least two thousand years old. This new research not only sheds light on this UNESCO World Heritage site but also illuminates how collaboration with Indigenous communities is critical to understanding their history and heritage. Indigenous Archaeology in the Philippines highlights how collaborative archaeology and knowledge co-production among the Ifugao, an Indigenous group in the Philippines, contested (and continue to contest) enduring colonial tropes. Stephen B. Acabado and Marlon M. Martin explain how the Ifugao made decisions that benefited them, including formulating strategies by which they took part in the colonial enterprise, exploiting the colonial economic opportunities to strengthen their sociopolitical organization, and co-opting the new economic system. The archaeological record shows that the Ifugao successfully resisted the Spanish conquest and later accommodated American empire building. This book illustrates how descendant communities can take control of their history and heritage through active collaboration with archaeologists. Drawing on the Philippine Cordilleran experiences, the authors demonstrate how changing historical narratives help empower peoples who are traditionally ignored in national histories.

Bernard Norling focuses on the Cagayan-Apayao Forces, or CAF, commanded by Maj. Ralph Praeger. Their bravery was unquestionable, but by September 1943 all but one member of Troop C had been claimed by combat, enemy capture, or disease. The only survivor, Capt. Thomas S. Jones, remembered, ""Defeat is a terrible thing. . . . It brings down with it the whole structure about which a nation or an army has been built. It subjects men to the most severe of moral tests at a time when they are physically least able to meet them.""
