Book German Military Vehicles of World War II

Download or read book German Military Vehicles of World War II written by Jean-Denis G.G. Lepage and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-03-21 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a cross-section of the most common transport vehicles produced and used by the German army. Tanks plus auxiliary vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, vans, ambulances, trucks and tractors made it possible for the troops to keep moving. These lightly armored or unarmored vehicles--aka "soft skins"--operated behind the front lines, maintaining supply lines, connecting armies with their home bases, and ultimately determining the outcome of battle. Beginning with the development of military vehicles in the early 1930s, this volume discusses the ways in which this new technology influenced and, to some extent, facilitated Hitler's program of rearmament. Nomenclature, standard equipment, camouflage and the combat roles of the various vehicles are thoroughly examined. Individual vehicle types are arranged and discussed by the following classifications: cars and motorcycles; trucks and tractors; half-tracks and wheeled combat vehicles. Accompanied by well-researched, detailed line drawings, each section deals with a number of individual vehicles, describing their design, manufacture and specific use.

Book Us Military Motorcycles of WWII Walk Around

Download or read book Us Military Motorcycles of WWII Walk Around written by David Doyle and published by MMD-Squadron Signal. This book was released on 2008 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During WWII, the US turned to Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle Company to produce military-worthy motorcycles. Other Allied powers also looked to these companies for bikes through the Lend-Lease program. As a result, Harley-Davidson produced the WLA, the U and UA, and the shaft-drive XA. Indian provided the 340-B and the 741, and the shaft-drive 841. Although the WLA, U/UA, 340-B, and 741 saw extensive military use, the shaft-drive bikes from both companies never saw combat. The advent of the Jeep took over the motorcycle's role in military service, and the bikes were relegated to veteran vehicles.

Book Thunderbolts Triumphant

  • Author : Chris Bucholtz
  • Publisher : Casemate Publishers
  • Release : 2018-11-10
  • ISBN : 1612006744
  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book Thunderbolts Triumphant written by Chris Bucholtz and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The action-packed story of the WWII aviators known as the “362nd Suicide Outfit,” including 150 photographs. During World War II, the Ninth Air Force comprised air-to-ground aviators, charged with destroying the enemy close to the front and below the clouds, often bringing them face-to-face with their German opponents. The 362nd Fighter Group, led by two very different leaders—the tough disciplinarian Col. Morton Magoffin and later the beloved motivator Col. Joe Laughlin—had one of the best track records in the Ninth Air Force. It destroyed over 5,000 trucks, 350 tanks, 275 artillery pieces, 45 barges, and 600 locomotives. But this score came at a cost, as over the course of fifteen months of combat in 1944 and 1945, more than seventy pilots were killed in action; in June 1944 alone, thirty of their P-47 Thunderbolts were lost. The other groups jokingly referred to them as the “362nd Suicide Outfit.” Thunderbolts Triumphant provides a narrative history of the group and gives a glimpse at the fascinating men who flew these missions and maintained the aircraft as they navigated Europe. Starting with the D-Day invasion, the group was the aerial artillery support for US ground forces, first in Normandy, then in reducing the defenses around Brest, then in supporting the US Third Army as it drove across France and Germany. Special emphasis is given to its most spectacular missions, such as the breaching of the Dieuze Dam and its incredible performance during the Battle of the Bulge, where it demolished much of the Sixth Panzer Army as it tried to escape eastward. Illustrated with 150 black and white photographs and twenty-four color aircraft profiles, this is a fascinating and detailed history of a group that played a significant part in winning the air war.
