Book excerpt: Absenteeism has been defined as the practice or condition of being absent, suggesting both the act of absence and a conscious decision being made (Atkin & Goodman, 1984). There has been a vast amount of literature written on the problems and causes of absenteeism. Steers and Rhodes (1984) have suggested that there are at least 209 variables in relation to absenteeism. This paper will not attempt a definitive break down of what is voluntary and avoidable labour absence attributed to sick leave, nor will it try to distinguish between genuine illness and non-serious or non-existent illness, since any absence from work is important to the employer. Rather, its focus will be on days missed from work, not attributed to holidays or long service leave. Building on previous research, the present thesis will attempt to study employee absenteeism in one work setting (a Welfare Organization) by examining the contribution to absenteeism made by two main sets of psychological variables- employees orientation that is, "Job", "Career", "Calling" and employees level of Intrinsic-Extrinsic motivation. This was accomplished using two self-report questionnaires consisting of eight psychological variables.
