Book Mother Lode

Download or read book Mother Lode written by Susan Addison and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A teenage boy is dying of cancer, and his mother cannot save him. But Susan Addison has a strong heart and a gift for words, and the stories she tells her son Charlie sustain them both through his long illness. These are stories of home, of Charlie's young life Before Tumour, of family cakes and the rich housekeeping heritage passed down the generations. They provide a comforting context - and the relief of humour - for the emotionally wrenching stories of life After Tumour. For these are also stories of home deaths. In a decade of loss Susan's parents and parents-in-law also die, but natural deaths at the end of fruitful lives are easier to bear.In writing of Charlie and his grandparents, Susan Addison draws on the rich mother lode of our common human experience of love, loss and grief. Her inspiring stories help us view death as an acceptable part of living, where memories and pain are shared, and laughter is never far away.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wished you had more information about your family, where you all came from, and what life was like for your parents and grandparents while they were growing up? I know for sure I wish that! Or, do you have a parent whose memories are fading fast, and you want to help them come back to the present? Does your parent have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's or other aging/memory problem? If so, this book might help you to slow the process. It's a beautiful, book inside and out with a monogrammed cover. One of the biggest regrets in my life is not getting a life history from my Mother before she died. Oh, I asked her to record some things, but she "never got around to it." I can't help but believe that if I had had a booklet like this that would give her memory prompts she might have found it a much more pleasant activity. And if I had actually been there and worked through it with her, I am sure the results would have been amazing! I would have learned some family history I'd love to hear about, and she would have known just how much I cared. Alas, by the time I came to this realization, it was too late and my precious Mother was gone. It's my hope that you will use this book in any way that helps you. I have included 100 questions that will help jog your Mom's (or even Grandmother's) memory. There are two pages for each question that she can fill out in detail. This can be such a fun and wonderful family resource! The questions don't have to be answered in order - but except for the very first question - What is your first memory? - they aren't actually added in any order because I've found that random questions tend to bring back more varied memories and form more associations. I'd think that you would get the best resuls by spending time with your Mom, filling out the book together while working through memories. Try it, and see how it enhances and deepens your relationship! My strongest hope is that this book will become a treasured family repository of memories, to be kept and cherished long after Mom or Grandmother are gone. Enjoy the extra Mom time you get while filling out this book!

Book The Last Ocean

Download or read book The Last Ocean written by Nicci Gerrard and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the award-winning journalist and author, a lyrical, raw and humane investigation of dementia that explores both the journeys of the people who live with the condition and those of their loved ones After a diagnosis of dementia, Nicci Gerrard’s father, John, continued to live life on his own terms, alongside the disease. But when an isolating hospital stay precipitated a dramatic turn for the worse, Gerrard, an award-winning journalist and author, recognized that it was not just the disease, but misguided protocol and harmful practices that cause such pain at the end of life. Gerrard was inspired to seek a better course for all who suffer because of the disease. The Last Ocean is Gerrard’s investigation into what dementia does to both the person who lives with the condition and to their caregivers. Dementia is now one of the leading causes of death in the West, and this necessary book will offer both comfort and a map to those walking through it. While she begins with her father’s long slip into forgetting, Gerrard expands to examine dementia writ large. Gerrard gives raw but literary shape both to the unimaginable loss of one’s own faculties, as well as to the pain of their loved ones. Her lens is unflinching, but Gerrard honors her subjects and finds the beauty and the humanity in their seemingly diminished states. In so doing, she examines the philosophy of what it means to have a self, as well as how we can offer dignity and peace to those who suffer with this terrible disease. Not only will it aid those walking with dementia patients, The Last Ocean will prompt all of us to think on the nature of a life well lived.
