Download or read book The Long Shadow of the Civil War written by Victoria E. Bynum and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Long Shadow of the Civil War relates uncommon narratives about common Southern folks who fought not with the Confederacy, but against it. Focusing on regions in three Southern states--North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas--Victoria E. Bynum introduces Unionist supporters, guerrilla soldiers, defiant women, socialists, populists, free blacks, and large interracial kin groups that belie stereotypes of Southerners as uniformly supportive of the Confederate cause. Centered on the concepts of place, family, and community, Bynum's insightful and carefully documented work effectively counters the idea of a unified South caught in the grip of the Lost Cause.
Download or read book 60 written by Robert Khayat and published by Nautilus. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1960, 22-year-old Robert Khayat experienced a year in which his own life, the nation, and the state of Mississippi were forever changed. The same spring that four college students in North Carolina refused to move from a segregated lunch counter, Khayat's SEC champion Ole Miss baseball team was denied the right to play in the NCAA tournament because they might encounter a Black opponent. At the same time that young John F. Kennedy became a household name, Khayat's dark-skinned father was making an unlikely ascent to become one of the most politically powerful men in Mississippi. And two high-profile segregationists - Redskins owner George Preston Marshall and Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett - would impact Khayat's life in ways he could never have imagined. The events of 1960 set the stage for a revolution . . . and Robert Khayat was living in the midst of it all. 60: A Year of Sports, Race & Politics is the story of the year that changed everything for a nation, its culture, and a promising young man from Mississippi.
Download or read book Mississippi Harvest written by Nollie W. Hickman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2009-02-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this classic work of Mississippi history, Nollie W. Hickman relates the felling of great forests of longleaf pine in a southern state where lumbering became a mighty industry. Mississippi Harvest records the arduous transportation of logs to the mills, at first by oxcart and water and later by rail. It details how the naval stores trade flourished through the production of turpentine, pitch, and rosin and through the expansion of exports, which furnished France with spars for sailing vessels. The book tracks the impact of the Civil War on southern lumbering, the tragedy of denuded lands, and, finally, the renewal of resources through reforestation. Born into a family of lumbermen, Hickman acquired firsthand knowledge of forest industries. Later, as a student of history, he devoted years of painstaking work to gathering materials on lumbering. His information comes from many sources, including interviews with loggers, rafters, sawmill and turpentine workers, and company managers, and from company records, land records, diaries, old newspapers, lumber trade journals, and government documents. While the author's purpose is to share the history of a natural resource, he also gives the reader the panorama of Mississippi. Mississippi Harvest interprets the state's people, agriculture, industry, government, politics, economy, and culture through the lens of one of the state's earliest and most lasting economic engines.
