Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting a new perspective on the saga of the enslavement of the Jewish people and their departure from Egypt, this study compares the Jewish experience with that of African-American slaves in the United States, as well as the latter group’s subsequent fight for dignity and equality. This consideration dives deeply into the biblical narrative, using classical and modern commentaries to explore the social, psychological, religious, and philosophical dimensions of the slave experience and mentality. It draws on slave narratives, published letters, eyewitness accounts, and recorded interviews with former slaves, together with historical, sociological, economic, and political analyses of this era. The book explores the five major needs of every long-term victim and journeys through these five stages with the Israelite and the African-American slaves on their historical path toward physical and psychological freedom. This rich, multi-dimensional collage of parallel and contrasting experiences is designed to enrich readers’ understanding of the plight of these two groups.

Book Egyptian and American Slavery a Comparison

Download or read book Egyptian and American Slavery a Comparison written by Henry Clay McDougal and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egyptian and American Slavery, a Comparison: Moses and Lincoln, a Parallel Drawn Between Israel's Leader and America's President "And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field; all their service, wherein they were made to serve, was with rigor." This oppression continued up to the time of Moses. "Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years." The exact date of their exodus is uncertain, but it is probable that it began about fifteen hundred years before Christ. Notwithstanding Egyptian oppression, the Israelites became "as the stars of heaven for multitude" for the seventy who originally went there had increased to "about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, besides children" at the time Moses led them over into the wilderness. The first census taken in the wilderness shows that "from twenty years old and upwards, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty." This did not include the Levites, who had charge of the tabernacle, and whose numbers aggregated over twenty-two thousand males above one year old, nor did it include the women. With all included there must have been over two millions of the children of Israel that followed their great leader out of Egypt and into the wilderness. There "they did eat manna forty years until they came to the borders of the land of Canaan." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Death of Race

  • Author : Brian Bantum
  • Publisher : Fortress Press

  • ISBN : 1506408893

Download or read book The Death of Race written by Brian Bantum and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian Bantum says that race is not merely an intellectual category or a biological fact. Much like the incarnation, it is a Òword made flesh,Ó the confluence of various powers that allow some to organize and dominate the lives of others. In this way racism is a deeply theological problem, one that is central to the Christian story and one that plays out daily in the United States and throughout the world. In The Death of Race, Bantum argues that our attempts to heal racism will not succeed until we address what gives rise to racism in the first place: a fallen understanding of our bodies that sees difference as something to resist, defeat, or subdue. Therefore, he examines the question of race, but through the lens of our bodies and what our bodies mean in the midst of a complicated, racialized world, one that perpetually dehumanizes dark bodies, thereby rendering all of us less than God's intention.
