Book Being in Time to the Music

Download or read book Being in Time to the Music written by David Ross and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being-in-time to the music from the ground up is a work in phenomenology, where this term is broadly defined, comprehending Plato, Heidegger, Hegel, and Marx. The most direct referent is Hegel, together with the theoretical revolution that he initiated with Phenomenology of Mind. This text’s more general purpose is to set the tone for a 21st communism based upon the idea of dancing with death, assuming full responsibility for one’s mortality, and abandoning the self to love as the meaning of existence. This dance is choreographed through my conversations with the above mentioned writers. In conversing with them I aim to displace (if not usurp) them from the throne of honour which is nothing more than the authority borrowed from me. By this I do not intend to deny completely their ‘other to me’ character. However, they exist or even ‘figure’ for me, both in the sense of of ‘count,’ having importance, as those that I read, and by which I read myself. They have borrowed my authority, namely, my own potential to be an author. So ‘reading them is to re-assume that borrowed authority. The life of the reader, to paraphrase Barthes, begins with the death of the author.

Book The Iliad the Poem of Zeus

Download or read book The Iliad the Poem of Zeus written by Pietro Pucci and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scholarly tendency has too often weakened the conspicuous novelty and originality that characterizes Zeus in the Iliad. This book remedies that tendency and depicts the extraordinary figure of Zeus: lord (or impersonation) of lightning and thunders, exclusive master of human destiny --and therefore of human history—and chief of Olympus. This unique personality endowed with polyvalent powers represents itself the conflict between superhuman moral indifference for mortal destiny and anthropomorphic feelings for human beings: he both preordains the death of his son and weeps on his demise. Zeus embodies the Mysterium tremendum. This new Zeus cannot glance at the past image that the tradition painted of him without smiling at its simplicity and disrespect: a parodic or amusing tone surrounds him as he refers or is referred to aspects of his traditional image. The great characters of the Poem give two wise responses to Zeus, lord of destiny: "heroic death" or serene acceptance. We, the readers, are expected to react in the same way.

Book Where Mortal and Immortal Meet

Download or read book Where Mortal and Immortal Meet written by Andrew G. Ralston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glasgow’s thirteenth-century cathedral is the city’s oldest building and one of Scotland’s top tourist destinations. The cathedral remains an active congregation of the Church of Scotland and serves as the focus for many events of national significance. It is, however, many years since a comprehensive overview of the cathedral’s history has been published. The standard work, The Book of Glasgow Cathedral, was compiled more than 120 years ago by George Eyre-Todd. Since then, the interior of the building has been completely transformed, thanks largely to the efforts of the Society of Friends of Glasgow Cathedral, founded in 1936 by the Rev. A. Nevile Davidson with the aims of “adorning and beautifying” the building and encouraging research into its history. To mark the eighty-fifth anniversary of the society, this new book traces the story of its achievements and presents the fruits of scholarship undertaken during recent decades, combining essays and lectures on the history of Glasgow Cathedral by eminent historians of the past with new and hitherto unpublished research. Where Mortal and Immortal Meet will be an invaluable resource for future generations of historians and for all those who have a love for one of Scotland’s most significant architectural treasures.
