Book excerpt: A princess born without feet must learn how to walk—and eventually how to rule—in this dark epic fantasy by an award-winning author. Acclaimed author Tanith Lee transports her readers to an ominous yet seductive alternate universe, as fully realized as Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Avalon, where fate organizes the forces of nature to bring to ruin those who dare to control it. Horrible screams pierce the night air as the Daystar, Queen Hesta of Akhemony, wrestles with the delivery of the King’s child. The baby is beautiful but has one heartbreaking deformity—she is born without feet. Consigned immediately to the world of death, the lame infant is dispatched to Thon, the underworld temple, and baptized Cemira, snake, the name she will bear throughout a lifetime of darkness. It is only at the behest of Urdombris, the Sun Consort, that the child is restored to her rightful place as heir to the throne on Oceaxis. Recounting a deadly battle for power, pitting the forces of man against the supernatural, her story is one that will captivate, shock, and terrify. Praise for Mortal Suns “Lee embellishes this reasonably simple plot with great richness of detail, and she makes Akhemony, though it calls to mind a number of places in our world’s history, a unique place. As is her wont, Lee weaves style, subject, and characters into a seamless whole.” —Booklist

Book Mortal Imitations of Divine Life

Download or read book Mortal Imitations of Divine Life written by Eli Diamond and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-31 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mortal Imitations of Divine Life, Diamond offers an interpretation of De Anima, which explains how and why Aristotle places souls in a hierarchy of value. Aristotle’s central intention in De Anima is to discover the nature and essence of soul—the principle of living beings. He does so by identifying the common structures underlying every living activity, whether it be eating, perceiving, thinking, or moving through space. As Diamond demonstrates through close readings of De Anima, the nature of the soul is most clearly seen in its divine life, while the embodied soul’s other activities are progressively clear approximations of this principle. This interpretation shows how Aristotle’s psychology and biology cannot be properly understood apart from his theological conception of God as life, and offers a new explanation of De Anima’s unity of purpose and structure.

While attempting to place the gratuitous carnage and depravity of the inner city into perspective, Mr. Perez accidentally stumbles upon an interdisciplinary mind control plan which draws upon religion, politics, economics, psychology, marketing, history, and the occult. Alarmed by his findings, Mr. Perez warns his community of their pending doom, only to be hunted down by the very debt cattle whom he tries to save from oblivion. In the end, both his community and his nation are condemned to fall under this nefarious plot, as this educators quixotic mission abruptly ends with an ominous knock on his front door.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in Irvin Yalom’s inimitable story-telling style, Staring at the Sun is a profoundly encouraging approach to the universal issue of mortality. In this magisterial opus, capping a lifetime of work and personal experience, Dr Yalom helps us recognise that the fear of death is at the heart of much of our day-to-day anxiety. This reality is often brought to the surface by an 'awakening experience' — a dream, a loss (such as the death of a loved one, a divorce, or the loss of a job or home), illness, trauma, or ageing. Once we confront our own mortality, Dr Yalom writes, we are inspired to rearrange our priorities, communicate more deeply with those we love, appreciate more keenly the beauty of life, and increase our willingness to take the risks necessary for personal fulfillment. This is a book with tremendous utility, including the provision of techniques for dealing with the most prevalent kinds of fears of death — especially by living in the here and now, and by embracing what Dr Yalom calls ‘rippling’, the influence and impact we all have that has a life beyond our own.

Book excerpt: Dublin has set a rule for the Breed to live by, which they must obey to survive. For what man fears, he will try to destroy and so the Breed must live within mortal bounds. Alex is a man with a past. In the sixth century court of King Arthur, he is Allexus, a prince and a knight whose unorthodox style of fighting- relying on the strength of the mind as much as of the body-draws scorn from some and curiosity from Arthur. As a boy, Allexus is told by a wizard that one day he will be a force to be reckoned with. The test of that prophecy leaps to modern-day Houston, where Alex confronts a very different world and a new band of adversaries. Join Alex and Linda Kay in a love story that will tear at the heart, a tale of warriors and soldiers and of the effort to create the ultimate fighter. Go back in time to see what demolished an allegiance between two men. Learn what to live as the Breed and then ask yourself, "Could I take the blood of another to survive?" Take a close look at the everyday people you see-they could be the Breed.

Book Mortal Remains

  • Author : Nancy Isenberg
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2012-07-05
  • ISBN : 0812208064
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Mortal Remains written by Nancy Isenberg and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mortal Remains introduces new methods of analyzing death and its crucial meanings over a 240-year period, from 1620 to 1860, untangling its influence on other forms of cultural expression, from religion and politics to race relations and the nature of war. In this volume historians and literary scholars join forces to explore how, in a medically primitive and politically evolving environment, mortality became an issue that was inseparable from national self-definition. Attempting to make sense of their suffering and loss while imagining a future of cultural permanence and spiritual value, early Americans crafted metaphors of death in particular ways that have shaped the national mythology. As the authors show, the American fascination with murder, dismembered bodies, and scenes of death, the allure of angel sightings, the rural cemetery movement, and the enshrinement of George Washington as a saintly father, constituted a distinct sensibility. Moreover, by exploring the idea of the vanishing Indian and the brutality of slavery, the authors demonstrate how a culture of violence and death had an early effect on the American collective consciousness. Mortal Remains draws on a range of primary sources—from personal diaries and public addresses, satire and accounts of sensational crime—and makes a needed contribution to neglected aspects of cultural history. It illustrates the profound ways in which experiences with death and the imagery associated with it became enmeshed in American society, politics, and culture.
