Download or read book Living with God written by Carlo Leget and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1997 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relation between human life on earth and 'life' after death in the theology of Saint Thomas Aquinas (1224/5-1274)? In this study this question is dealt with from the perspective of the foundations, dynamism and perfection of the human relationship with God. It is shown how Aquinas' ('negative') theological analysis of 'life' as a name of God works out in qualifying his account of both human life on earth and 'life' after death as two interrelated modes of living with God. Written at an accessible level and having the width of a thematic study on the key-word 'life', this book can also be read as an introduction to the theology of Thomas Aquinas.
Download or read book The Emblem written by John Manning and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2004-04-04 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emblem, an image accompanied by a motto and a verse or short prose passage, is both art and literature: in the emblem tradition, the image presents a story – often with pictorial symbols – and the verse below it drives home the picture-story's moral instruction. It is one of the most fascinating, and enduring, art forms in Western culture. John Manning's book charts the rise and evolution of the emblem from its earliest manifestations to its emergence as a genre in its own right in the sixteenth century, and then through its various reinventions to the present day. The seventeenth century saw the development of new emblematic forms and sub-genres, and the sharpening of the form for the purpose of social satire. When the Jesuits appropriated the emblem, producing enormous quantities of material, a further dimension of moral seriousness was introduced, alongside a concentration of emblematic "wit". The emblem later came to be directed increasingly at young people and children; in particular, William Blake adopted a fresh attitude towards ideas of the child and childishness. Since then, reprints of 17th-century emblem books have been produced with new plates, and writers and artists from Robert Louis Stevenson to Ian Hamilton Finlay have used emblems in new and subversive ways.

Download or read book Spirits of Life and Perception written by Michele Meroni and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-11-14 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does a plant shrink at night and swell in the day, like an animal breathing in and out? For a long time, the Galenic concept of spiritus provided a causal explanation for human and animal life and perception. Albert the Great (1200-1280), whose honorific acknowledges among other things his pioneering work on biology, extended the concept to plants. This is only one of the remarkable concepts studied in this book, the first comparative study of Albert's concept of spiritus. It unveils the Arabic roots of his early psychophysiology and the original developments found in his mature Aristotelian paraphrases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The excerpts from the Declamations of Calpurnius Flaccus (2nd century A.D.) are one of our major sources of knowledge concerning controversiae, model court speeches on fictitious themes. These formed the focus of Roman higher education and therefore had an enormous effect on Latin literary style and content from the late Republic on. They also contain important indirect evidence for contemporary social history. This book provides a general introduction to the work, a new Latin text, plus the first English translation and only full modern commentary. The latter discusses the legal background and origins of the cases, points at issue, textual problems, and matters of Latin style. The volume will therefore be of interest to students of classical rhetoric, education, history, and philology.
