Book Volcanic Successions Modern and Ancient

Download or read book Volcanic Successions Modern and Ancient written by R. Cas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of our aims in the book is to provide geologists with a sound basis for making their own well founded interpretations. For that reason we cover not only concepts about processes, and the nature of the products, but also methods and approaches that may be useful in analysing both modern and ancient successions. Most importantly, we treat the diversity of products in volcanic terrains as facies, and we use the method of facies analysis and interpretation as a means of constructing facies models for different volcanic settings. These models will, we hope, be useful as norms for comparison for workers in ancient terrains. The idea for this book came into being between 1981 and 1982 when J. V. W. came to Monash University to take up a Monash Postdoctoral Fellowship. During this period a short course on facies analysis in modern and ancient successions was put together, integrating J.V.W.'s extensive volcanological experience in numerous modern volcanic terrains with R.A.F.C.'s extensive sedimentological and volcanological experience in older volcanic and associated sedimentary successions in the Palaeozoic and Precambrian of Australia. The enthusiastic response from the participants to the first short course, taught in May 1982, and to subsequent annual re-runs, encouraged us to develop the short course notes into this book. The idea for both the short course and the book arose because we felt that there was no single source available that comprehensively attempted to address the problems of analysing, interpreting and understanding the complexity of processes, products and stratigraphy in volcanic terrains.

Book Whey to Go

Download or read book Whey to Go written by John MacGibbon and published by . This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, Britain was about to join the EEC and New Zealand's dairy industry was desperate for new markets and new products. They were found, partly thanks to a group of talented young technologists, scientists and marketers, a multi-national beverage company and a transformational new technology called ultrafiltration. At the time, casein products were seen as an important part of the diversification push, But there was a problem: how to deal with the potentially polluting whey byproduct from large new casein plants? One answer came through ultrafiltration, a technique that enabled the production of whey protein concentrates. They could be tailored as specialised food ingredients and were so valuable that processing highly dilute whey became profitable. These concentrates, along with other whey products, are now an established industry and almost no whey is wasted. It is New Zealand's biggest waste to riches story.WHEY TO GO is the story of the early decades of development, written by several of the pioneers: Ken Kirkpatrick, Kevin Marshall, Dave Woodhams, Mike Matthews, Peter Hobman, Lee Huffman, Jim Harper, Robin Fenwick, Arthur Wilson.

Book Ecology Management and History of the Forests of the Mamaku Plateau New Zealand

Download or read book Ecology Management and History of the Forests of the Mamaku Plateau New Zealand written by A. E. Beveridge and published by Pub. Team Department of Conservation. This book was released on 2009 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forests of the Mamaku (or Patetere) Plateau, North Island, New Zealand, have a history of numerous land uses, and now exist as key enclaves for indigenous biota within the Bay of Plenty. Conservation focus is moving from single-species protection to a more comprehensive management approach, targeting multiple pests at key sites. This annotated bibliography covers a timeframe from the late 19th century onwards. It includes research and survey work on the forests, flora and fauna, with some information on soils, geology, and hydrology. It also covers the history of logging and conversion of logged indigenous forest to pine plantations on land leased to forestry companies. Podocarp restoration trials following cutover operations are outlined. This is the third compilation of annotated bibliographic information on the ecology and management of indigenous forest of the central North Island Volcanic Plateau, following publications on the Pureora Forest Park and Whirinaki Conservation Park. The bibliography is an ongoing project and its authors welcome updates, corrections, or details of relevant articles.
