This volume ventures what the generative mechanism is that produces such rapid change and discusses how this differs from late Modernity. Contributors examine if an intensification of morphogenesis (positive feedback that results in a change in social form) and a corresponding reduction in morphostasis (negative feedback that restores or reproduces the form of the social order) best captures the process involved. This volume resists proclaiming a new social formation as so many books written by empiricists have done by extrapolating from empirical data. Until we can convincingly demonstrate that a new generative mechanism is at work, it is premature to argue what accounts for the global changes that are taking place and where they will lead. More concisely we seek to answer the question whether or not current social change can be regarded as social morphogenesis. Only then, in the next volumes will the same team of authors be able to remove the question mark.

When I started to study differentiation and morphogenesis in Volvox I hoped for a straightforward answer along prepared groove- only to find out that also here things follow Murphy's Law: they were much more complicated than expected! Experience would have warned any ex-service man never to utter an idea or else you would be made responsible, and it came as it had to come: I was made impressario of this gremium; I had to assemble the experts. These Proceedings contain their expertise. I cannot even say that I biased it by my picking. In the beginning I aimed at setting different accents by inclination and force of habit. Then, by trial and error, by advice and declination, the programme shaped itself. It eventually gained momentum of which also the size of this volume is indicative. In this volume are printed all the papers presented - with two regret ted exceptions - but not the sometimes lively discussion, which clari fied and pruned here and there. It would just have made the size too unwieldy. Differentiation and morphogenesis start with the expression of genes. The development programme reels off the genome and is regulated by the position of the appropriate genes. Their structure is in the focus of gene biochemistry since the decisive tools have become available.

Book excerpt: Variability is an intrinsic characteristic of biological systems, essential for evolution and embryogenesis.Considered as noise for centuries, it is only recently that the stochasticity of biological processes has began to be systematically explored.The present thesis addresses the following questions: What is a normal development?What is the extent and role of variability in developmental robustness and resilience?We tackle these issues in rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus and Sphaerechinus granularis).We also aimed to quantify determinism and stochasticity of developmental variability by means of sea urchin twins and cloned rabbits.Variations in cell behaviors were investigated through reconstruction of cell lineage from 3D+time imaging.We showed that sea urchin twins can follow three different developmental paths never observed in normal embryo, before converging to normal looking blastula.Moreover, comparisons between and within pairs of twins revealed that phenotype and survival depend on individual history alone.Our quantitative observation of twin pairs raises question opening a future line of research: are twins robust or resilient?Rabbit preimplantation development was explored with five digital specimens (three wild-types and two clones) from the 32-cell stage to hatching.We showed that inner and outer asymmetric divisions regulate the variation of inner cell number and may control inner cell mass size.In addition, the variation of inner cell number in clones is higher than outer cells which seems to be directly correlated to their cell death ratio.Our current hypothesis is that the potential to lead to viable clones requires plasticity of donor's epigenetic state.This work is expected to ground concepts and methods for a quantitative exploration and further multilevel modeling of morphogenetic processes.

It starts out by describing the great normative transformations from morphostasis, as the precondition of a harmonious relationship between legal validity and normative consensus in society, to morphogenesis, which tends to strongly undermine existing laws, norms, rules, rights and obligations because of the new variety it introduces. Next, it studies the decline of normative consensus resulting from the changes in the social contexts that made previous forms of normativity, based upon ‘habits, ‘habitus’ and ‘routine action’, unhelpfully misleading because they no longer constituted relevant guidelines to action. It shows how this led to the ‘Reflexive Imperative’ with subjects having to work out their own purposeful actions in relation to their objective social circumstances and their personal concerns, if they were to be active rather than passive agents. Finally, the book analyses what makes for chance in normativity, and what will underwrite future social regulation. It discusses whether it is possible to establish a new corpus of laws, norms and rules, given that intense morphogenesis denies the durability of any new stable context.
