Examining Europe's encounters with Jews, Muslims, Africans, Native Americans, Mongols, and the Romani ('Gypsies'), from the 12th through 15th centuries, she shows how racial thinking, racial law, racial practices, and racial phenomena existed in medieval Europe before a recognizable vocabulary of race emerged in the West. Analysing sources in a variety of media, including stories, maps, statuary, illustrations, architectural features, history, saints' lives, religious commentary, laws, political and social institutions, and literature, she argues that religion - so much in play again today - enabled the positing of fundamental differences among humans that created strategic essentialisms to mark off human groups and populations for racialized treatment. Her ground-breaking study also shows how race figured in the emergence of homo europaeus and the identity of Western Europe in this time.

The legend of King Arthur and his knights was no less popular in the medieval Low Countries than it was anywhere else in medieval Europe. It gave rise to a varied corpus of Middle Dutch Arthurian verse romances, most of which are contained in a single manuscript, the so-called Lancelot Compilation of MS The Hague, KB, 129 A10. This manuscript of the early fourteenth century contains a cycle of verse narratives that rivals in its scope and thematic concerns the better known Old French Vulgate Cycle of Arthurian tales and Sir Thomas Malory's Morte D'Arthur. This volume contains new critical work on these and other Middle Dutch Arthurian romances, twelve studies by eleven established scholars in the field of Arthurian literature. In addition to this new scholarship, the volume is provided with an extensive introduction to the Arthurian literature of the medieval Low Countries, as well as summaries of all the extant Middle Dutch Arthurian texts. The first book of Homer's Ilias recounts the plague that swept the camp of the Achaeans. While this instance concerns a full-length book, it is the aphorism that is of greater importance as a literary technique for the dissemination of medical knowledge, from the "Corpus Hippocraticum" of antiquity until the "Aphorismi de cognoscendis et curandis morbis" (1715) by Herman Boerhaave. In addition, the subject of illness and its impact on mankind was explored by great numbers of poetic scholars and scholarly poets.This collection offers fourteen articles which all highlight the relation between disease and literature. By analyzing Starkey's extraordinary laboratory notebooks, the authors show how this American "chymist" translated the wildly figurative writings of traditional alchemy into quantitative, carefully reasoned laboratory practice—and then encoded his own work in allegorical, secretive treatises under the name of Eirenaeus Philalethes. The intriguing "mystic" Joan Baptista Van Helmont—a favorite of Starkey, Boyle, and even of Lavoisier—emerges from this study as a surprisingly central figure in seventeenth-century "chymistry." Book excerpt: The language of some eighteen million people living at the junction of the two great cultures of western Europe, Romance and Germanic, is now taught by some 262 teachers at I43 universities outside the Netherlands, ineluding Finland, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Czecho slovakia, Portugal, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea. These teachers obviously need to keep in regular and elose touch with the two countries whose culturallife forms the subject of their courses. Yet the first international congress of Dutch teachers abroad did not take place until the early sixties, since when the Colloquium Neerlandicum has become a triennial event, meeting alternately in the Netherlands and Belgium, in The Hague (I96I and I967), Brussels (I964) Ghent (I970) with the fifth Colloquium planned for Leiden in I973. Financial support from the Dutch and Belgian governments enables the majority of European colleagues, and a number of those from other continents, to attend a conference lasting for four or five days and ineluding discussions of the problems involved in teaching Dutch abroad and papers on various aspects of current Dutch studies of interest to those who are working in a certain degree of isolation abroad. At the first Colloquium a Working Committee of Professors and Lecturers in Dutch studies at Universities abroad was set up.
